I find that most of Joe Cocker's covers are generally at least on a par with the originals.

I prefer most of his covers. His leather lungs can rip through anything and make it more soulful...

A lot of people have covered these Animals classics, and Eric Burden (singer for the Animals) is almost never beat. The only one who beats the original is David Johansen (former leader of the infamous New York Dolls). His version is amazing. Also, Johansen's "best of" album out-Stones the Rolling Stones. Off the beaten path, but ridiculously good in my book.

I've found that my perspective has changed over time too. Starting as a folkie type in 66, I gravitated toward the electric versions of vintage tunes. Clapton, Jeff Beck et al had great ears for picking among possibilities, then playing them in a smoothed out version that often emphasized playing skill along with the lyrics. As a budding guitarist and non-singer, this had a lot of appeal.

But over the years I've come full circle. Today I more tend to appreciate the organic, often not very polished originals. Clapton's "Crossroads" is a hit and for good reason but I like the sparse, under-produced original by Robert Johnson and Elmore James did a terrific version back in the early 60s. Nowadays, when I play (even if on electric), I try for something more like the original.

I will always prefer the Floyd version, but I love the Primus version.

John, Elvis, and others did it; but, Tina does it best IMHO.

+1 on David Lindley, John. Good call. Not because my first car was a 63 Merc', but because his album sits with my other LPs and it rocks. 8)

Heh. I first heard of David Lindley on CBC's "Basic Black". Arthur Black played "El Rayo", and then said "Gotta love them party horns". I found "Mercury Blues" only after I'd bought the "El Rayo-X" CD. It's the first tune on an iPod playlist that I call "Road Trip!"

I discovered David Lindley at a shopping mall flea market where there was a charity record sale. I managed to score a mint copy and I'm glad I did. There's a great bio on Wikipedia and, not only was this album produced by Jackson Browne, but Lindley has worked with a long list of who's who (from Curtis Mayfield to Dolly Parton, Joe Walsh, and a slew of others). Love those old record/cd sales and that initial tangible contact. Enjoy the "Road Trip", John. :D

Delilah (Tom Jones song) a British power ballad covered by many, my favorite is The Sensational Alex Harvey Band version.

I've made mention of my lack of preference for rap elsewhere; but, I have also heard some rap that I find entertaining.

Having said that, this thought came to mind . . . I wonder how many rap songs will be covered in the future? After all, some songs with decades of history have made it to current charts.

Just a thought. 8)
