Uh Oh. Run for cover. Them's dangerous words, partner. (Just kiddin' fenderfan).

Good thing Roy and Bill Dees wrote the song for Eddie and the boys.

Van Halen does a great job, however, with most everything they did/do. IMO

This one with Roy and his celebrity friends, Fenders included, is not too shabby either.

Nice video! Like the teles and am a Roy Orbison fan.

Was born in the same hospital as Roy Orbison so feel a bit of a connection but still like Van Halen's version better.

Hey SBLS:

That's not playing fair. I'll never be able to make a video like that. After showing my wife your post she said The Troggs rule .

Some covers are in left field (sounds good though, Eric)

http://youtu.be/0X67kd7MHS4

Might not have happened without this version?:

http://youtu.be/txOiLxVp3A4

Actually, the truth behind it all lies here:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alberta_%28blues%29

It might be of some note that even though Leadbelly had the early version of Alberta in 1935, Mary Wheeler 1944, and other versions before and after, many lyrics and melodies are not similar. Credit goes to the early artists, however, for a similar theme and title.

In this case, our favourite guy, Eric wins the prize for his version, Paul Petersen for his, Leadbelly and Mary Wheeler for theirs. :D

Ghost Riders in the Sky has to be one of the most covered tunes ever.

With all the old and new versions I thought I'd listen to as many as possible. The more I listened to, the harder my decision became, especially since I'm still developing a version of my own until I'm ready to lay down the track.

So for now . . . these are contenders with my preference for The Trashmen.

the original

Scatman Crothers - old school

The Trashmen - surf cowboys.

I could fill this up with more, including newer versions, but, rather than be greedy and scooping up all the versions I like. I'll leave the rest on the range.

I once burned a CD of various artist's rendition of Ghost Riders. It had around 12 versions on it if memory serves and I'm sure there are many others. My favorite was/is by the Outlaws.

That's what I'm talking' about. So many great versions, and the Outlaws made one of them. Thanks, IM4Tone for that addition.

Creedance did it, Feliciano did it, others did it, but my choice is still this:

How about "Stormy Monday"? I know this is Blues heresy, but I like the Allman Brothers version better than the original by T-Bone Walker and better than anyone else's version . . . and there were a lot of them. BMI alone lists 45 different versions.

+1

It's hard to dissent whenever the issue at hand includes the stunning guitar work of Duane Allman and Richard Betts.

I find that most of Joe Cocker's covers are generally at least on a par with the originals.
