Dan999 has a great topic Who Would You Consider To Be The Most Underrated Guitarist?

On a similar slant (thanks Dan for your contribution), I thought this might be fun:

Sometimes, the popular version of a song (or performance) is thought to be better, certainly in opinion. But, sometimes earlier or later versions are preferred, and maybe there are reasons for it . . . such as genre change, different technology, playing skills and technique, arrangement, recording, or whatever.

Tell us your favourite. If you have a reason why you made your choice, you might want to add that too. (Best to keep it simple. Also, a mention of equipment would be fine, but we don't want to start a battle of guitars or amps. This is meant to be light and entertaining, maybe even informative) :D

Here goes:

I'll start with the song Apache.

I'm a huge fan of Hank Marvin; however, for me, I prefer Jorgen Ingmann's version. Hank plays well enough, has a slew of hits, has a great band, his showmanship shines, and represents England's contribution to the Strat. Jorgen (a Dane) made Jerry Lorden's Apache a hit in the U.S. in 1961 when the Shadows did not have their version released in America. It is questionable why EMI chose this approach. I'm glad they did, because I bought Jorgen's 45 rpm when it was released. Jorgen was, at the time, IMO, a far more accomplished player. 8)

Sorry, but for me Hank's version is FAR superior . Better than Jorgen and the Ventures by miles
(but then again the Ventures version of Walk don't run is better than the Shadows )

How about "Dreams" by the Allman Brothers?

It's a great anthem with plenty of tasty guitar and B3 work but OTOH, Molly Hatchet's version is just as legendary.

Decisions, decisions......

Personally I love them both, and in equal measure.

I respectfully disagree. I think Molly Hatchets version sounds strained, like they were trying to make more out of the song than was there. I like the Allman Bros. version better.

How about "Talk, Talk" by The Music Machine? I think Alice Cooper did a pretty good job of updating a good song. This is a pretty obscure song. I'm into moldy oldies.

Jorgen's pizzicato picking technique worked in the song, I've always liked the song who ever is playing lol.

Escape - Rupert Holmes. Excellent song
Escape - Manchester Orchestra. This band covers the song excellently

Little Wing as done by Derek & The Dominos. Jimi's version is pretty, so is SRV's but Eric and Duane take that song to a sweeping crescendo that has no equal. The level of emotion exhibited by these, probably due to their sadness of Jimi's passing, but both reach down and really turn the song into an anthem!

Another very tough call, but I think I have to go with the Eagles version over Linda Rondstadt's verson. Rondstadt is more polished but Henley is more expressive.

Rondstadt Desperado

Eagles Desperado

I prefer Molly Hatchet's version myself. Obviously not to disrespect the Allman Brothers...just a preference.

I will probably get killed for this one (I do in my personal life with friends and family)....as much as I love Bob Segar; when Metallica did "Turn The Page", it showed me that a really good heavy metal band can make a classic, heavy and still soulful. I prefer Metallica's version.

It really depends. Most of the covers are weak in every sense compared to an original; leftovers if you get my drift.
Sometimes you get two equally great versions of a great song - like that Desperado above.
And then there's the few covers that are just magical; my example for this is Jimi's version of Watchtower...

I've always loved the late Jan Ödner's solo on this:

Wow...there have been soooooo many great covers over the years, it's hard to know where to start. As a person who's primarily a cover musician, this is certainly a subject that is rather near and dear to my heart.

Whenever I'm discussing this particular topic, the first song that always comes to my head is Manfred Mann's cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light" (along with the lesser known "Spirits in the Night" both found on the LP The Roaring Silence). Now I have to admit here that I am something of a Springsteen fan, however the first time I heard the Springsteen version of Blinded by the Light, I like to damn near gagged...it was just aweful...hard to believe it was the same song! LOL! The same goes for the Hendrix version of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watch Tower"...a tune covered even later by Bear McCreary in the t.v. epic Battlestar Galactica (and a downright wicked version of the tune!). I've always thought Dylan was a great song writer and lyricist, but as a musician, he really always left a rather foul taste in my ears. After listening to Jimi's lead for so long, Dylan's harmonica solo...yikes, I say...YIKES! The Hendrix and McCreary versions of Watchtower are just soooooo much better (in my never so humble opinion).

As other's have said, "Little Wing" certainly comes to mind...although folks seem to have left out Sting's version (another really great cover of that classic tune). I grew up with the Cream version, however I was blown away the first time I heard SRV's version...not sure I could really pick a favorite version there as I've liked them all. I have to disagree with dunedindragon on Desperado however...I like the Rhondstadt version there myself (as well as a couple of other covers she did over the years) :-).

Then of course we have the Trogg's classic "Wild Thing", covered by X (later used in the movie 'Major League") and later by comedian Sam Kinison. I like the Troggs original and yea, the Kinison version cracks me up big time, but the cover by X is by far my favorite.

Heart, or more specifically the Wilson sisters, I have to say I love the cover they did of Led Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore" which they performed as The Love Mongers.

While I'm obviously a fan of the music and many of the groups of the 60's and 70's, including The Mama's & The Papa's, I have to admit that I was blown away with Queen Latifa's cover of "California Dreamin"...the Jose Feliciano version was decent as well, but Latifa's version is almost magical.

Then there's the Blues Brothers who did some magnificent covers, including Sam & Dave's "Soul Man", The Chip's "Rubber Biscuit", Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn" and Booker T's "Green Onions". Even their covers of Rawhide and the Perry Mason theme were very cool. Some REALLY great covers there! 8)

What about the Elvis Presley cover of Carl Perkin's "Blue Suede Shoes"? Elvis just rocked :D .

Aerosmith's cover of The Beatles "Come Together"...kind of a toss up there. 6 of one, half dozen the other as is the Joe Cocker version of "With a Little Help From My Friends"...both versions were great. And if we're gonna mention The Beatles, I gotta love their cover of The Isley Bros "Twist and Shout", although in this case, I like the covers done by the The Who. And as for The Who, ya gotta love their version of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues". From The Who we could jump to Elton John's cover of "Pinball Wizard", although in that case, I gotta stick with the original.

And how could we forget Clapton's versions of JJ Cale's "Cocaine" and "After Midnight" or even Clapton's version of Bob Marley's "I shot the Sheriff"...hand's down, Clapton all the way!

And speaking of Clapton, perhaps we should also consider artists who have covered themselves...Clapton's "Layla" vs. Clapton's "Layla - Unplugged"...both very cool.

Heart's live version of "Crazy on You" from The Road Home certainly blows away the studio version from Dreamboat Annie (in my book at least)...although I did prefer the original version of "Mistral Wind" over the Road Home version.

And while Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb" from The Wall is certainly an all time great and personal favorite, the live version from "Pulse"....wow!

Great topic, but dang...there's just soooooo much music to cover! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
