Lately I've been reading an absolute ton of bullshit about what might be and what aren't Fender brand strings.
So if you know the truth or maybe some truth please post your insights here.
Thank You

The truth is that there is always some truth in the truth
how true it is to you from your point of view
are you behind the big desk
wearing robes and handling a gavel
are you the dipstick down front
wringing his hands as his life unravels
all true and nothing but true
that is up to you
keep the BS out of it I hope

There is no path to truth. It must come to you.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

What if you're not home. Do they try to redeliver? I hate when that happens.

Well, truth is, if the envelope says "Fender", has the headstock logo, and not a lot of typos on the back, they're probably Fender brand strings.

Well the truth (at least *my* truth) is, I started with Fender's 150L sets back in '67 and used them until Ernie Ball's Slinky strings showed up in 1970. I haven't touched a Fender string since and have no plans to do so.

I used to use Fender Bronze Strings on my Acoustics and D'Addario's on my electrics until , I discovered Elixirs , and that is the truth !!!!

Hhmmm...

While I'm not sure what you've been reading (although it may be interesting), I suspect that if you were to buy Fender branded strings from a reputable retailer (Guitar Center, Sam Ash or countless others), you're probably buying Fender branded strings. Are these manufactured by Fender specifically? Not really sure there...it's quite possible that being a larger global company, they very well may outsource them. Wouldn't surprise me a bit as Fender has even outsourced the manufacture of their instruments from time to time (look up mid 80's Strats that were "Made in Japan" for example). Consider the tuners found on MIM and American Standards...they're stamped "Fender" but they're made by Schaller. Not sure if that's what you were looking for, but I suspect it's quite possible the strings are made by another company specifically for use with the Fender brand name.

I will say that I've used Fender strings in the past (on my electrics at least) and would certainly use them again...whether they're actually manufactured by Fender or not (personally I don't give a ratt's butt who makes them...they're decent strings, LOL). The primary reason I use Boomers on my electrics and EB Earthwoods on my acoustics simply comes down to price...the difference in sound , feel and longevity between these brands and Fender isn't really too significant at all (in my book at least), however I have around 25 guitars right now and at a difference of a buck and a half to two bucks a pack, that adds up pretty quick.

That all said, I have to admit that you have my curiosity peaked here - why the concern?

My concern is bass strings in particular. On another forum there is some rather nasty anti-Fender hate. I'd just like some solid history on Fender string production if anybody has it. I remembered this post by brotherdave.

http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=91620&view=next

What I'd like to know is what happened after the Squier string making operation was shut down up until CBS Fender shut down string making altogether.

I do know that Fender's 4 and 5 string bass sets are being wound to Fender's specs by D'Addario. Fender's Bass VI sets used to be LaBellas.

So can any one fill in the blanks?

The truth is out there, Scully. :P

Personally, I'm not a fan of Fender strings, but if they are made by D'Addario that would explain that. I'm not a fan of those either. They have these cheap feel to them in comparison to other brands, although they aren't the worst I've tried. Of course, that's just my preference. Another person's trash is another's treasure and all of that.

You need to define Fender Strings.

There are several processes in the manufacturing of strings, developing the alloy, pulling the wire, winding the wire and packaging the wire.

There are only two major manufacturers who actually pull the wire, one right in Tenessee - Mapes Piano Wire Co.

They do use Brand spec alloys and other proprietary processes as subcontractors to other companies (brands).

Winding wire isn't as difficult a process or require the same extensive machinery as pulling, so many brands do in fact wind their own strings, incl. Fender.

A lot of brands do total subcontracting because the economy of scale dictates that they need to sell a lot of strings to justify the costs and make profit.

Somewhere in all this is the truth you seek... Where is anybody's guess...

cheers!

Speaking of strings, has anyone had any experience with Black Diamond strings? http://www.blackdiamondstrings.com/ They have been around since 1890. I saw an advertisement for them in Bass Player magazine, but other than that never heard about them before.

I have used Fender Strings in the past, but after going through several different brands (the most used was D'Addario XL's), I am currently enamored with Dunlop Willy G's Mexican Lottery brand...feel awesome, sound great, last a long time, and have a cool package.
