Hey, can anyone give me some suggestions or advice for an academic path to instrument manufacturing? I'm an long-time semi-pro player (hear some of my bass work at http://www.myspace.com/room101open) interested in pursuing luthiery and guitar/amp tech as a career. There's a new guitar-making school in Chicago, and I enjoyed their intro setup/repair class immensely, but unfortunately the maestro doesn't yet have academic/vocational accreditation that would allow me to apply for student aid for his program. (A real bummer, you can see how cool his shop is at specimenproducts.com) So: what type of degree/resume would a company like Fender (or any production and custom guitar manufacturer) like to see in a potential applicant? Manufacturing arts and design? Electronic engineering? A wood-working job? All of the above? And does anyone know which schools in Chicago (there are quite a few) would offer the appropriate curriculum? Any and all constructive feedback is welcome!

I'm not aware of any acredited academic path to lutherie. I could be wrong. You can try this: http://www.americanschooloflutherie.com/

Another option is to find a luthier and try to get an apprenticeship.

Call Fender support and ask about career paths.

There's a lot of books out there on the subject and there are plenty of kits out there for making acoustic guitars from scratch.

There's a few ideas for ya.
