You know, I like the idea of layering different guitar tracks like that. Humbuckers, single coils, etc. I think it gives it a nice broad sound, plus when you add the bass in there. I might use humbucker for lower rhythm parts and single coils for high end things, or whatever you want.

Loving both and owning both, would you say Fender aims more for Rock n' Roll, and Gibson to the Country and Western players? Now I know everyone plays both, but on the whole over the years what is most associated with each brand? Water is muddied by so many performers crossing over, especially in the early years. Maybe there is no preference, but why do I tend to lean this way?

I don't think this is something that can really be defined in terms of "Fenders are good for such and such" and "Gibsons are better for such and such" or any other broad ranging stereotypes, as any time you try to do this, you'll find plenty of examples that will prove you wrong.

As I recently mentioned in another thread, in the early days of Fender, they had a strong relationship with country players of the day and that infamous "Tele Twang" is certainly a testament to this. On the other hand, even in the early days the great Muddy Waters took the Tele across the boundaries from country to blues...a tradition followed by the likes of Steve Cropper and others. Even with more contemporary country you have folks ranging from country players like Bonnie Raitt (notably a Strat player) and Danny Gatton (another tele player) to blues with SRV and Buddy Guy to all over the board on rock...Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, Richie Blackmore, David Gilmour (all mostly Strat players)...you name it.

From the Gibson side of the isle you have a lot of hard rock/metal players that have used Les Pauls from Jimmy Page to Zack Wild to Billy Gibbons. Of course, if you want to go WAY back in history long before these contemporary styles of music were around, you also have Les Paul himself. Gibson has certainly made it's mark on blues as well, with folks such as B.B. and Albert King. Certainly some notable Strat players such as Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton did a lot of their earlier work on Les Pauls.

Obviously none of this even accounts for brands other than Fender and Gibson...Carlos Santana with PRS, people like George Klien, Scotty Moore and Brian Setzer with their big bodied Gretsch's, as someone else mentioned, the early days of the Beatles with those lovely Rickenbackers...............seriously, how does one begin to try and definitively classify all of this beyond great guitars and great players?

In other words, some rock players like Fender, some like Gibson. Some country players like Fender, some like Gibson. Some blues players like Fender, some like Gibson. Other's still prefer instruments from the likes of Jackson, Kramer, Schecter, Gretsch, Danelectro, Yamaha, Ibanez, ESP, Guild, Squier, Epiphone, Daisy Rock, Hamer, Ovation, Martin, Takamine, Seagull, Dean, Parker, Cort, Music Man, Washburn, BC Rich, Peavey, Alvarez, Luna, Charvel, Giannini, Hofner, Teisco, Carvin, G&L........................... Seriously, how does one even begin to say that any one guitar maker is better for "such and such" type of music than another?

What it really comes down to is simply this; personal preference. There's no real right or wrong here at all. Regardless of genre, people play what feels best to them and what works best for their own individual unique sound. Instead of trying to apply a stereotype in a situation where you really can't, regardless of brand, model, origin, price, etc., simply enjoy your guitar for what it is...a guitar.

I play whatever style I feel like playing on whatever guitar I'm holding, regardless of the brand or model.

I bet you could tie these 'preferences' to the economic conditions existing during that era.

In general, Gibsons are twice as expensive as Fenders, and this price differential surely plays a part...

cheers!

Back in the day you didn't have a thousand aftermarket pickups to choose from - you played whatever came in the guitar. Now you can buy a Strat and select a pickup that fits whatever type of music you play - blues, surf, classic rock, etc. You don't have to buy a Strat for this and a Les Paul for that. Except maybe surf - Strats, Jaguars, and Jazzmasters seem to dominate although I'm sure someone out there must be using a Les Paul.

And this is what it should boil down to. 8)

fenderfan mentioned surf, so I'll add Mosrite to the competition. Surf, contrary to some lesser informed, is alive and well in various forms including that which includes an evolved form. Strats play a large part in that area today.

But, it's not surf I wish to bring to this discussion. It's the fact that rock includes R&B, Funk, Disco, Acid Rock, Fusion Rock, and a a whole lot more. You'll find Gibsons and Fender throughout.

One other thing one must take into consideration, that although that LP (or other Gibby) might be stage centre, you might not have to look far to see a Strat, Tele, or Precision/Jazz Bass, or Fender amp supporting it. (The reverse could be true, however . . . but, less likely) IMO

It's interesting that many Gibson owners also have a Strat and vice versa. I believe location and chosen genre unique to that location can sometimes have a bearing with one's popular choice of axe. I grew up on the coast and Fenders were popular in my area. We're I in Nashville it might have been a Gibson, for example. Had I lived in Spain . . . well, you get the idea.

In the end, a great guitar is a great guitar - and there are many.
