Loving both and owning both, would you say Fender aims more for Rock n' Roll, and Gibson to the Country and Western players? Now I know everyone plays both, but on the whole over the years what is most associated with each brand? Water is muddied by so many performers crossing over, especially in the early years. Maybe there is no preference, but why do I tend to lean this way?

If anything, the Fender Telecaster is what's the most popular C&W electric, so I think you're dead wrong. Not that it isn't useful for many other things, including rock, blues and punk.

"Loving both and owning both, would you say Fender aims more for Rock n' Roll, and Gibson to the Country and Western players?"

I agree with loving both, played Gibson's own Fenders. Aims no, traditional vs modern design in the eyes of the beholder.

"Now I know everyone plays both, but on the whole over the years what is most associated with each brand?"

See above.

"Water is muddied by so many performers crossing over, especially in the early years. Maybe there is no preference, but why do I tend to lean this way?"

Perhaps a podiatrist could help with your leaning, new shoes or pads to balance things out.

Don't forget the jazz players and blues players that swear by Gibson.

Over the years these things have changed, primarily based on what sound tends to be popular. It really doesn't have that much to do with what the companies "aim" for, but rather what guitar seems to suit the music style of the times. Certainly in the late 60's and 70's Gibson tended to be dominant in Rock and Gretsch was the more dominant guitar in country. By the 80's rock had tended to shift more to Fender due to brash sounds brought in by punk and new wave and tele's became more dominant in country for it's twang. As mentioned before Gibson has tended to be the more dominant brand in jazz and blues until the last couple of decades where people like SRV invfluenced the use of strats into blues.

The point is these things changed based on preferences for a given sound in the genre. I think one factor in the decision for Fender to buy the Gretsch brand was to have an answer for the growing preferences for clean robust tones in the rockabilly and country areas and a resurgance of interest in that unique Gretsch sound.

As for myself I own all three brands (Gibson, Strat, and Gretsch) so I'm pretty much covered for whatever trend there tends to be.

You see very few single coil guitars in Metal and that's one thing that has never changed.

To my way of thinking this discussion boils down to that issue. Fender is the largest and most well know company which primarily makes single coil guitars. The same could easily be argued for Gibson and humbuckers.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Would have to agree in some ways, but Gibson in the 40's/50's was trying very hard to create guitars to cater to the Jazzers, blues not so much. The ES175 was NOT made for anything other than Jazz, so the company was actively trying to create a reputation.

Then along came Fender in the 50's, and their biggest users were West Coast Country Swing band since that music was quite popular there. Fender did cater to the country music crowd, because those were the professional musicians he was listening to, and building equipment for these folks, and in some cases, like Bill Carson, where working for him. The Telecaster did fit country very well, not that it wouldn't later be used for many other genre's.

That all changed quite a bit during the 60's and 70's as Clapton showed what could be done with a Gibson guitar when it came to Blues and Blues based rock. Jimmy Hendrix brought the Stratocaster back into the Blues/Rock crowd in the late 60's and Clapton kept that going starting in 1970. These two players abilities and use of certain guitars where the leading factors in popularizing not only the models but their manufacturers and the changes in perception by the public.

During the 70's Gibsons where dominantly (not exclusively, but predominately) used in heavy rock (Les Pauls, Explorers, etc) and Les Pauls inparticular saw a resurgence with their association with Slash. His use of the guitar really pushed the Les Paul back into the forefront...possibly due to "Stratmainia" that had reached its peek and many artists were looking something from different and Slash showed the way. Does it matter that Slash was repeating something done by Clapton two decades earlier? No, the music and the instruments that are popular is what drives peoples interest in particular instruments, but that doesn't mean the companies that produce them don't cash in on that popularity and market their products appropriately.

That's my two cents FWIW.

Agreed, but Telecasters seem still popular with country players (Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Brent Mason, etc.)

Don't forget, there's also Gretsch, Rickenbacker, Danelectro, and many others that have been thrown in the mix over the past 50 years or so.

Gretsch and Rickenbacker have made some fine axes and were popularized by the Beatles, and in the case with Gretsch's also by Chet Atkins and some other country players, but they were not on the same level as when it came to manufacturing and marketing that Fender and Gibson were.

I really don't see how it can simplified that way.
I own both-and I play the same stuff on both--and the other brands I own.

I see the advantage of owning the various brands, but each for their specific purposes. That's a key benefit if you play a lot of different styles of music. If I'm playing a heavier rock style tune I'll use the Les Paul. For blues or rock requiring less overdrive and lots of bite I'll use the Strat. For jazz, country, rockabilly, finger-picking or 60's pop sounds I'll use the Gretsch.

I think if anything it's the exact opposite.

Teleacasters seem to be the primary weapon of choice of most of the country players.

I am not a huge fan of country music, but I don't see a lot of Gibsons being used.

I would say that Starts seem to dominate the "Blues" scene, but that said, you can definitely make the argument that les pauls and 335s are quite popular too.

at the end of the day, what really matters are the hands that are working it that makes all the difference.

That depends on what kind of blues you're talking about. I can't think of any slow Louisiana/Swamp blues players that use strats, for example (but now that I said that, I'm sure someone will point out a handful).
And in British blues, when Fenders are used, they seem to more often be Teles or Jazzmasters.
