I was thinking last night (as I sometimes do) that my guitars allow me to accomplish something that has been perplexing not only men and women of science but the whole human race for eons and that's the ability to alter and compress time.Every time that I've ever sat down alone with a guitar,I have lost all concept of time.It all started in my teens when after hearing Jimi Hendrix for the first time,I started to really practice in earnest and would spend hours practicing.I often would start at around 10 AM and when I'd stop for a break thinking it was probably 12:00 or 12:30 it was probably as late as 3:00 PM.This has continued to be the way it is for me right up to the present time.I often ended up being late for some function or other by deciding to "have a few strums" to pass the time until it was time for me to leave and would end up being as much as an hour or more late. It's an amazing bit of technology that can shrink time like this-now,if only I could get it to take me back in time to meet Bach,Mozart,Paganini and even Jimi.

Yes, Me too. I love the times when I am "in the zone" working on a part or a new song. Hours pass like minutes. I always keep at least one guitar out on a stand and picking it up for a few minutes when I am a little early to go somewhere is a mistake. I too will end up being late. But, I really don't care, something magic happens when I pick up a guitar I love. It is a feeling I can't describe, other than pure joy! :)

Guitars are almost as bad as video games.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

When I was a kid I could sit down and play guitar for hours at a time. Sometimes I'd forget meals! I can still do that, but the difference is that now I very rarely have the opportunity to spend that much time on any given thing at once.

I clicked into this thread out of curiosity. But having read it I would agree wholeheartedly on this whole time becomes meaningless when you play theory. What I am needing right now is my own dedicated space to retreat to with my "toys." Just somewhere to get away from all the distractions of 3 kids, phones, TV's, computers, etc.

One kid graduating from tech school in May and ready to head out into the world, my time is fast approaching. My guitars, basses, drums will all have a home and I'll have my spot to retreat to.

My wife : you're wasting too much time with your guitars.
Me : No, hon. It was time well spent.

How true.

I had a guitar, then I didn't have a guitar, now I do have a guitar again. I could not explain the desires and withdrawals that were within me when I could not express those notes and vibes wishing to be released.

Scientifically, I now feel that I'm the person I always knew (but, for a time, wasn't). My axe gives me the means to be me, the person I was meant to be . . . and, good or bad, I can share it. :D

I have noticed that too. I am really new to playing guitar (little over a year now) and I have found that, for me, I can relax when I am with my guitar. I work at a small business and I am tasked with developing new products. There are days when I have to work on problems and at times I leave work with the problems unsolved. On the drive home I problem solve, plan and sometimes talk on the phone with the people that I just left behind, about issues.

When I make it home I can't stop thinking about work until I pick up one of my guitars. Then I disconnect. I play until I head to bed and sleep like a baby after playing. It is very therapeutic.

I couldn't imagine NOT having a guitar. Except for the time I didn't. 8)
