I bet Eddie and Dave are laughing all the way to the bank, and really don't give a hoot what Sammy and Michael think. Everyone at that level knows there are better artists around, they have to be confident in what they do enough to discount those who think less of them. I think when you get to that level you accept criticism, with a focus on the tour, the shows, your technique, and the money and the fun and fame. And to heck with the detractors.

Not to say I think less of Sammy and Michael Anthony. I enjoy what they do whenever I see them on the tube, but I think Van Halen is the bigger draw and by far.........Sammy has a great lead guitarist, that black guy, who is every bit as capable as Eddie, and probably has a wider range of licks and styles. Plus on the tours Michael may show up and do his thing with Sammy's band, he is also real good and has excellent harmonies and lead singing skills as well.

I think Eddie is playing as well as ever, maybe even better than ever, I have some of the live stuff from the old days that we glommed from the Clubhouse on Mark007's now defunct Tone Farm. And Eddie was really pretty sloppy on some of the tunes. Those video's on Jimmy Kimmel show a well practiced, and very capable instrumentalist, with pretty flawless playing. And McLaughlin level speed in some of his licks. Pretty impressive.

Seeing that Eddie has been clean and sober for a few years now, has put a new spark into his playing. I saw them on Ellen last week and they did " Jump ". Dave seemed to be out of pitch a bit but the rest of the band was smoking. I do wish though , that Michael Anthony was back in the fold. It just doesn't seem to be VH without him and his great background vocals.

Two things on this ...
1) I don't think it is so much "laughing all the way to the bank" as it is "needing something to deposit at the bank"'.
2) And why would they care at all "what Sammy and Michael think"?

Some thought on Van Halen ... I was as a big VH as any. I have seen them twice with DLR before they broke up, at least 4 times with Sammy, and once with Gary Cherone. The VH III era w/ Cherone was as not as bad as everyone seems to remember. The album was not bad, and live they SMOKED (best VH live concert I saw except for the 1984 tour). I can't accept new VH due to Dave's withering voice. I have been a DLR apologist for decades now, and was still buying his albums and seeing him solo even after (stupidest thing he ever did) was letting that first solo band led by Steve Vai get away. I wish they would bring Cherone back. I really, really do...

Basically I put that line in because of my response to someone on another forum and I thought it would be a nice thread to start on other musical forums, and it was on most of the places I put it, it started a nice discussion everywhere but here, here there seemed to be not much interest.

& I agree, of course they might need the money. Don't we all?

In Sammy's book "Red" he mentions a lot of the financial issues that the VH brothers were having. Also - not related to VH - Pete Townshend mentioned in his book that the Who toured once or twice just because John Entwistle was broke and needed cash.

An interesting bit of useless trivia: After DLR departed, and EVH got over wanting to replace Ace Frehley in KISS; EVH really wanted to switch to a frontWOMAN led sound. Patty Smyth of Scandal was in talks to front the band. I would have loved to hear that sound!

Patty seems to be out of the limelight now... but if I pulled the strings I would like to see Lita Ford fronting the band now!

It is very well known that Gene Simmons was involved in cutting some demos for Van Halen before they got signed to Warner Bros. However, per David Lee Roth's book, Gene Simmons' help with demos was only a ploy to audition EVH for the soon-to-be-needed replacement for Ace Frehely. According to the book, Roth picked up on this right away, and would not allow any sessions without the entire band, and no meetings without him (Roth) being there. It would not have worked anyway ... Eddie is wayyyy too prolific a songwriter to be hemmed in playing Simmons/Stanley tunes for ten years ...

Van Halen is a good band, always been. Van Hagar was a good version of the band. When that ended "there seemed to be not much interest." Keen observation.

Maybe DLR needs the coin but I don't think Eddie does now , with his highly successful line of EVH gear , for which he can thank Fender for allowing him to distribute, etc.

Ahh, I see mention of Sammy's guitarist. Vic Johnson, originally from The Busboys. They did the song The Boys Are Back In Town (not Thin Lizzy version) from the movie 48 Hours. Damn good guitarist and looking forward to the live release of The Circle.
I saw the VH performance and thought they seemed pretty fresh. Even Wolgang seemed much more relaxed and natural up there. Yeah, DLR is struggling, but what vocalist is not at that age. Sammy does not deliver as he used to and I don't miss too many Sammy shows, whatever project it is. I guess there is an acoustic effort that has been in the works for awhile now with DLR and John 5 that I would much rather here. I am sure DLR is holding off to release that though, until he needs to. I never had the pleasure of seeing the VH III lineup, but I heard Cherone did a great job live. The new VH tour has my interest especially with Kenny Wayne Shepherd opening.
