So just recently, say 6 months ago, I stopped playing the drums (after 20 yrs) and decided to play guitar and sing full time.

I really loved my old guitar player's Am Strat. So I rounded up all my old crappy guitars and amps, threw em on Craigs List, and bought my first Strat. A 2004, mint condition, wine red, MIM strat. Love it!! Along with my Vox Valvetronix amp, it didn't sound to bad.

But I wasn't satisfied, so after about a months research and shopping, I am now the happy owner of a Fender Hot Rod Deville 2x12 amp. Absolutely love this amp!!! Fantastic combination.

and now I think have "the itch". I just ordered a used 2011 Telecaster FSR silverburst from Guitar Center. Should be here tomorrow.

Is there a salve, or an ointment for this itch? I have a feeling the "pedal itch" is coming next.

I'll post some pics of everything when my tele gets here. ;)

Welcome.
The only cure I have ever found is extreme will power.

Yours is a "condition" that can only be managed (much like diabetes, sleep apnea, arthritis, and the like) but it requires copious quanities of $$$.

There is no cure.

hahaha,
Hopefully I can just put a band-aid over it for a while.

The wife is gonna kill me if I keep dropping cash like this.

Divorce can put a nasty damper on things, or it can be completely liberating.

The J chord, welcome to the Forum. Sounds like you have some serious GAS (gear acquisition syndrome) a lifelong musical condition that can be treated successfully by acquiring music related gear ie: guitars, amps, pedals, mic's, stands, cables, picks, drums, cymbals, hardware........
These treatments are however temporary and will require additional therapy (more gear) from time to time. You have now access to some of the best and most professional gear aficionado's on the planet right here who can help as we all are recovering GASers.

Not all, I have not reached the point where I want to recover yet. I will ride the Gear Dragon to the edge and hang on with all I've got!

Hhhmmm...lemme see... At the moment I have 24 guitars in my arsenal (not counting unfinished projects and a couple of "wall hangers"), 3 drum kits, including 1 electronic kit (not including various hand percussion and enough shells and parts to build two more 5 piece kits), 3 basses, 2 violins (1 acoustic, 1 electric), a mandolin, a dozen amps (along with a 2 x 12 and a 4 x 12 cabs), 2 or 3 PA systems including a rack of effects, eq and 3 power amps (depending on how you divide things with the monitors and such), 20'ish microphones, a piano, 3 midi keyboards, guitar synth, 8 effects pedals, recording equipment (interfaces and software), 2 auto harps, guitar stands, mic stands, a mile or two of cables..............

...and that does NOT include my wife's gear (except the PA gear which we share). She's a musician too. She's got her own mic & stand, flute, bass, hand percussion (Djembe), etc..

Of course there's also a few things I'm GAS'n for too...I'd like to pick up Roland JC - 120 (and/or a Twin), an acoustic bass guitar (perhaps even a fretless), an upright bass, a Fender or Squier P/J bass (an old P-Lite maybe?), an Ampeg BA115 bass amp, a large body semi-hollow (maybe a Gretsch or another Ibanez Artcore), a Schecter C1 Classic, a Rickenbacker 360 (and maybe a matching Rick bass), a 4 if not 8 buss 16 channel mixer, some Zildjian Dark K's (cymbals), an Axis bass drum pedal, a vibra-slap, some in ear monitors, EMG Strat pickups, a banjo (one of those Dean 6 strings), a UA 610 compressor, a MOTU 8 channel interface, maybe some gear for a decent light show, a few more hardshell cases (particularly for the 2 semi-hollows)......

Now that said, I -am- trying to trim down the gear...at least a bit. In my case, while it's not a "cure" per say, a temporary treatment for my own GAS has been the fact the my wife and I are moving to a new house soon (no clue yet what size the new studio is going to be). Between saving up for the new house and trying to "lighten the load" for moving day a little, I've been selling off some old gear I'm not using. At the very least, I've been trading some gear I'm not using for stuff I can use...just sold a couple of Boss distortions and used the money to get a volume pedal, a Joyo tremolo pedal (awesome pedal btw), a second Snark tuner and a couple packs of strings. Just traded off a bunch of low end Strat parts for a few hardshell cases, trying to trade one of my MIM Strats (the lefty) for an Artcore AG-75 (or similar), a few more sets of Duncan strap locks (at least the buttons), etc..

For those of us who suffer from this dreaded (and REALLY fun) ailment, I think that any real treatment really just comes down to money...or lack there of...and that doesn't really cure it as much as simply puts a damper on things until more cash rolls in or the money tree starts blooming again. I guess "space" can be a limitation...I do remember the days when my "studio" was mostly limited to an 8 x 10 bedroom in the back of our apartment (25 years ago before we bought a house)...I -never- would have got all the crap I have now into that back bedroom.

The best advice I can offer to someone who suffers with GAS - marry another musician. At least she (he) is more likely to understand when this affliction flairs up.

BTW...I'm also a photographer and have the same problem with my photo gear. Really...don't get me started....

Ya, I'm thinking pretty soon I'll have enough for a music store myself. I still have all my drum kits & my PA system.

Maybe some Bean-O will help with this G.A.S.

Some of us have a far superior gear inventory than a typical music store. Maybe not in sheer quantity but certainly in quality.

Well, the Strat needed another guitar to keep it company when it's not being played. It's kind of like having a cat. You often get another one to keep it company so it doesn't tear up your stuff when you aren't around. At least that's the theory. :P
