Love Poison Idea. If you think you don't like punk rock - sit down with "Feel the darkness" and "Blank, blackout, vacant". Preferably with the lyric sheets.

For starters, check out "Plastic bomb", the opening track on "...darkness". That intro. That chorus. The amaaazing drumming. (They have a lot of songs with way cooler guitar playing, but that one is a good starting point).

Their late guitar player Tom Roberts once said, "the problem with punk rock was it told everyone they could do it. And most can't. It's dogsh-t."

I agree. And I think that's one of the reasons some people miss out on some really good stuff. 'Cos a lot of it is dog doo. But then there are some bands that are really, really good. I for one wouldn't want to miss out on them.

Punk did inspire me. It was like a kick right in the b@lls of anything posh.

Funny thing is, it started as kind of a pre-fabricated style, and yet it turned itself against all things artificial.

It became raw, crude and still musical.

I like the idea of picking 2 or 3 roffs and making a cool song with that. It's like you get a guitar, and tell a beginner: "ok, this is a chord. Look, this is another one. Ok, that's right. here's a third one. Now go form a band" and nevermind what people say, its YOUR art.

That's good, you know?

Punk inspired me to be diligent in my guitar practice regimen so I would NEVER sound that bad.

After all, punk is to rock as rap is to music.

How does punk rock inspire me? I'm not sure "inspire" is really the right word....

Back in the early 80's, I had gone thru something of a punk phase...for a while there I was getting into stuff like The Clash, The B-52's, a bit of The Electric Prunes, The Sex Pistols, Wendy O & The Plasmatics and most notably Devo. I had grown up with a lot of the music my older brother listened to...stuff like The 4 Seasons, The Beatles and Elvis, etc., (although my Dad was heavy into Classical, which I also enjoyed) and later I started getting into more of the classic rock stuff...Deep Purple, ELO, The Who, J. Geils, Clapton and even later still Pink Floyd.

How punk fit into the middle of all of that...I'm still not really sure (LOL). The main thing I remember the most was the idea that "trash has an audience"...I think that in the same way Jackson Pollack had an influence on a lot of visual artists (blech), punk had an influence on me in that "music" doesn't necessarily have to sound "good" to be acceptable. Of course back in my mid to late teens, I also thought Wendo O was just HOT! LOL!!!!!!!! Many of my friends really believed I'd end up marrying a woman like that.....

I guess the biggest part of it was simply that it was "different"...I've always been the odd man out (long before I ever found the Fender forums...snicker snicker). I was "Goth" long before most people really knew what it was and long before it was ever considered "cool", just as I was a Trekkie back in the day where you'd get punched in the face just for admitting you liked Star Trek. In some ways I suspect it was simply that for that time, punk music was as different as I was.

As to the gear I used...I honestly haven't played much punk at all. When I finally got my first electric, I dove right into the likes of Deep Purple, Eric Clapton and The Who and shortly after was when I got heavily turned onto blues with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Willie Dixon and others. The few punk tunes here and there over the years have simply been played on whatever I was using at the time...it was never a sound I really tried to tailor or develop to any degree. A couple of the old Clash tunes I used to do were mainly on my Kramer or my old Memphis thru my old Bandmaster (all of which I still have) and when I got into bass, I had done some Devo using my old Kay P-bass clone (Mongoloid specifically)...never even had a bass amp back then. That said however, -if- I were to ever try and develop this as a "sound", I think my approach would likely be...ummm..."cheap". To me punk was always something of a twisted evolution on the garage band theme...or perhaps the bastard offspring of garage bands, hard rock and grunge (all that is meant to be rather tongue in cheek in case anyone's wondering). As I once read about The Sex Pistols, "Johnny Rotten couldn't sing and Sid Vicious couldn't play guitar, so when they got together it made this horrible noise that sold a million records" (or something to that effect). To me at least, punk was always more about loud and obnoxious...truly an "in your face" style of music than any particular sense of tone per say. Both lyrically and in terms of the music, it made a statement and did so in a way that was rather hard to ignore, much the way The Who had done back in the 60's and 70's and it was a statement that a lot of people could identify with. As such, I think my weapons of choice would likely be a low end Strat or Tele or perhaps a Mustang or Jag, along with a LOUD solid state head.....with lots of speakers, LOL!!! Personally I'd shoot for something that was more than a bit abrasive...create that whole "wall of sound" thing that would not only test the limits of the audience, but of the other band members as well :-)

My introduction to punk came in the early 1980s when I heard a classmate playing Dead Kennedys song Too Drunk to (expletive). Admittedly the vulgar lyrics had a certain appeal to a teenage boy, but more than the words, that bass line, that raw sound, not the overly polished disco crap of the decade before, something more free, there was something about it that made you want to play, and convinced you that you COULD do it...

I do agree with the above comment about punk being a kick in the b@lls to anything posh. I wish I had thought of that line. And yes it IS very simple, kind of like Blues is simple... It's all about expression, not refinement.

As far as influential punk bands / artists, I would have to give credit to the Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, TSOL, Suicidal Tendencies, and probably Hüsker Dü.

Like I said, the sound fit the teen angst of the time... It was that boot to the stones while screaming F*@K YOU TRYING TO MAKE ME SOMETHING I'M NOT!

I, like a few others here, am not well versed in the punk world. I really only listened to the Ramones and The Clash.

The biggest things that Punk taught me, the first being - no matter what the musical style, a pop sensibility is still important. The Ramones are proof of that. The Clash taught me that sounding good is still important. That beginning to Clamp Down gets me pumped every time - love that drum, guitar and bass sound!

To the OP, heck yeah! I'm a big fan of the MC5 also. I see them as an influence to punk. I also see Iggy and the Stooges as an influence to punk. When I first heard punk and new wave I hated it at first! It grew on me with time. This happens when you've been listening to great stuff like Beatles, Stones, ZZ Top, Doors, CCR, Cream, Hendrix, Deep Purple, etc, etc. It was culture shock for me. It is hard to go from Johnny Winter and Yes to punk without glitching out your brain a bit. I like the music I never lived the life styles of punk. I really hated in the 80s when the shallow entertainment media (MTV and such) projected the view that synths and foppish artists were going to take over. These same idiots are the ones who ruined MTV.

It's all about energy, energy, energy! Punk rock is for everyone. There's no wrong way, unless it's about fashion, or solely to make $$$. Punk rock is the people's music. Punk rock is for music-lovers. It's probably the most honest genre of music, hands down.

Hah!! I was going to write almost the same thing!! I practiced harder and even got into fingerpicking so people wouldn't call me a "downstroker".

Ok, so I'm a old fart. That's doesn't mean I can't take alternative music like Punk. Like all music there's good and bad. In Punk, there is very good; but, is it just me or is the bad in Punk REALLY BAD? For example, screaming is found in jazz, blues, and rock, and less in country. Aside from some Metal, most times the shouting lyrics are understandable. If they're not, you might as well sing to yourself in a closet. Of course a decent mix can add to the quality and many times this is missing when each band member fights each other for attention, Most genres (including Rap) can take full orchestration or crossover and this can lead to longevity and numerous other possibilities (Punk rock less so . . maybe this is good, although country is being infiltrated, and in some cases dismantled with genres such as this).

Whatever the case, Punk has its place, but on a commercial scale is it true to form? I only wish the bad was better - or less bad.

I've always liked my rock and roll simple and direct. That includes a lot of things that aren't necessarily punk rock: rockabilly, garage, roots rock, power pop, reggae, some hard rock and heavy metal, British Invasion, a lot of New Wave.

What I initially liked about punk rock was that it was a return to the early energy of rock and roll. The songs didn't have to be technically "perfect," but they did have to make you wanna move. Specifically, to jump around like a maniac.

I like jumping around like a maniac. Even at 56.

Great post, Brian. Talk about a moving jumpstart on a rising career. I salute you. Looks great. Your point of simple and direct is well taken.

When you get to be my age you'll find that jump difficult to do, but then again mini trampolines may be the answer, or you could stand in one place while the crowd sits down and stands up sporadically.
