Hi everyone,

Fender has always been part of punk history, from the Ramones to Rancid. Both are built on a foundation of self-expression—about making a statement and showcasing your personal voice and vision.

With that in mind, check out our exclusive punk feature for a look at great Fender punk gear and tips and tricks for fundamental technique and tone. You can also listen to the pros talk about their relationships with punk, like this interview with the MC5's Wayne Kramer about it's early incarnation.

Don't forget to share your own experiences with punk music here. Tell us how it's inspired you, and let us know about your Fender arsenal for the job.

Thanks all!

I grew up in small town Iowa (you know, corn fields, bean fields, rivers and ponds); punk rock really wasn't heard or played in my area. Seems like it is more of a city genera.
When I finally was introduced to it (early adulthood), I guess I already had my favorite sounds and bands...and couldn't get myself to give it a chance. Seemed too fast and uncontrolled to me (which makes sense considering I was listening to Lynard Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, and CCR).
80's Rock hit the scene...and I took to that; and though they had big hair, and screaming guitars...they slowed it down and you can understand them.

Punk Rock has it's place, and I can understand the appeal to some....but isn't my thing.
I'd imagine just about any guitar/amp configuration would work for punk, so long as you play dirty and fast.

Punk showed that anyone can be in a band... it took the mistique and elitism out of popular music. The DIY attitude really inspired an entire generation that they could do it too. And that attitude still exists today with home recording and reverbnation, bandcamp, etc. Punk was and still is a breath of fresh air.

I think the one thing you can take from it is the DIY attitude. Of course, everything else is debatable where that genre is concerned. What you may call punk, I may not, and vice versa. Blah, blah, blah. To me, that $@!& doesn't matter anymore. I think it's the spirit of it and attitude that's important. Everything else is really just fashion.

My introduction to punk rock was the movie "Rock 'n' Roll High School", which heavily featured the Ramones. I fell in love from the start with that original vision of punk rock. Still melodic, but loud and fast. I never embraced it as a political or social issue vehicle, simply as fun and carefree. I was 14/15 at the time and was just finding myself musically as I had just that year started picking up the bass guitar. In junior high I was listening to KISS, Cheap Trick, Foreigner, etc. and really enjoyed those bands, but didn't yet relate to them as a musician as my skills were cursory at best at that time. Hearing the Ramones belt out hit after hit at their furious pace inspired me that I didn't have to wait to start playing and writing songs. Their stuff is simplistic, but fun and powerful. I, to this day, try to keep that element in my playing and writing.

This. Paul Simonon's bass work in The Clash hit me at a very young age and was really the lightning rod that made it all boil down to "You have to get a bass." Dee Dee Ramone let me know that it was doable for me to be in a band. Without that first wave of punk I may have never really tried to play. It may have seemed out of reach. My family certainly couldn't afford expensive lessons for years. There are a lot of people who put down punk. However, it did something very important for an entire generation of us growing up in the 70's and early 80's. It let us know that making music was something we could do, and we could do it right now. That's huge. It's powerful. It gives people a voice when they feel they don't have one.

I grew up at a time when just about all the radio stations were either playing disco or Led Zep's Stairway to Heaven. Not saying Led Zep was horrible but to have to listen to that song 3-4 times every hour it could drive you crazy. Well that along with disco was really horrible. I searched the FM stations and came across a college station I believe it was WFMU which would play songs from bands like the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Dead Boys, Black Flag and the Plasmatics. I was like wow now this is different. I would go to the city (NY) which was only 15 minutes away at twice a month, head down to the village to check out many of these punk bands at the famous CBGB's. The place looked like a dump, had graffiti all over the walls and the bathrooms down in the basement was always an adventure. The sound system at CBGB's was amazing. Every band sounded great in that place. Met many friends and girlfriends in that club. I have many great memories of the people and the bands that I will never forget. 8)

I don't listen punk extensively...I like a few artists (Ramones especially), but I am by no means well-versed in the genre as a whole.

However, punk does inspire me in this way:

It's raw, it's real, and poseurs are rarely tolerated.

Punk artists tend to have a very individualistic style, tone and timbre to their work.

I wish more blues artists (and audiences) would learn to follow that creed. Too much derivative douchebaggery is tolerated in the blues genre nowadays.

I think there's people out there doing different stuff. I know the band I'm in is trying. We've got some originals that are definitely in the blues wheelhouse and we are even doing a Howlin' Wolf cover that I've re-arranged so that it has a different vibe, but still respects the source material and keeps it's spirit. We kind of skirt between roots genres anyhow, then just put our spin on them.

I think there is an unfortunate mindset with a lot of people who are in the industry that feel that it's only Blues if it's played the way (insert traditional or british/revival) blues artist did it. With the same tones, and the same tired arrangements. However, that doesn't mean there aren't people out there playing the blues and doing fresh things with it. It just means they are kept from being recognized as Blues musicians by the people who have christened themselves "caretakers" of the genre.

A lot of the people turning to blues with a fresh perspective now actually come from old punk scenes. To go forward you have to look back, right?

Another thing about punk for me, it also developed into other things, especially post punk groups, who started off doing punk, or at least had the spirit and attitude of it. So it's also a stepping stone to other things, I think.

And one of the GREATEST things about Punk was the fact that it brought the BASS to the forefront. A lot of the time the BASS was the lead instrument and carried the song. Along with Funk and Jazz, Punk really helped shine a brighter light on our little corner of the stage lol. And along with what PaulLF said about it inspiring new forms of music like Post-Punk, it also ushered in New Wave, Grunge, Shoegaze, etc, etc.
