I just got my Fender vintage strap, it looks fantastic.
However, my strap lock (dunlop) might be too big for it. See below.

I'm afraid of it breaking and smash my guitar...
Does these straps require a smaller strap lock? Or is it just like that?
Thanks guys, any info will help!

I have a Fender strap with Dunlop strap locks and it works fine. I do prefer my Levy guitar strap for looks and comfort.

so we're talking about one of these really thin straps like this?

Seems like it would be fine, but of course neither Dunlop nor Fender is going to guarantee that.

I have Schaller strap locks and like them a lot. They look a little smaller if you're concerned:

I have a Breadbag Straplock on one of my guitars. Was going to go over a song one last time before taking off for the night and just as the guitar almost hit the floor I remembered that the hole was wearing out on the strap. Used one of those square breadbag clips that keep the bag shut as a C clip on the button just to get me through the night - now been there for years. Used a black Sharpy on it and can't even tell its there!

Just wanted to offer an experience I had with the Schallers like pictured in strings10927's post. I had those at one time but almost lost my Musicmaster bass when it gave way. What happens is that the "pin" that retracts when you pull to release it, it wears down at an angle while the guitar moves and hangs on it. Just gave way on me one day when it wore down enough and luckily I caught it.

Not trying to be an endorser of one kind or the other, but the ball bearing idea of the Dunlops have since served me well and have them on all my guitars.

Having to enlarge the hole in straps is common enough, regardless of brand. Use a rotary tool like a Dremel with a conical bit to enlarge the hole, or a good knife and some patience if you don't have a rotary tool.

Oh dear - so far so good with mine, but maybe I should check it periodically. How old were your strap locks, and were they real Schaller or a knockoff?

It was awhile ago but I would guess they were a couple years old at the time. They were genuine Schaller's in black. It was on the post where it sat in part that mounts to the guitar. It's like that pin was "sheared" off at an angle and just came out.

I would recommend visual inspection quite often. I don't like to bad mouth companies or products since everyone is capable of having a lemon or two but wanted to mention it to you.

Umm...this is just my own opinion here of course, however...Fender or not, I just would NOT trust such a thin strap. If that sucker is gonna break, it's gonna happen regardless of whether it has strap locks on it or not, let alone what brand the strap locks are. Are the words "Fender" and "Vintage" really worth risking your guitar over regarding something like a strap?

I will say that I've used both Schaller and Dunlap...personally I prefer the Dunlaps as I find them easier to deal with (particularly at 2 a.m. after a gig when I'm half dead and putting the guitar back in it's case to head home). Truth be told, I don't really care for those pokey little knobs on the Schallers. That said, the Schaller's -might- be a better fit, BUT for the difference...seriously...if you care about the guitar, then just get yourself a beefier strap. For the $20 you'll spend on a set of Schallers, you can easily get a strap that you can be confident with.

My thinking is simply this; the reason I use strap locks to begin with is to protect the guitar(s)...if you're gonna use strap locks, then use them on a strap that you can be sure of!

Again, just my own opinion.

I got one of those with my 1976 Precision. I threw it away the very same day I got it. A more worthless bass strap, I can hardly imagine.

In 1958, that's all she wrote. Lots of experience for several years until new ideas came along.

Leather is a lot stronger than you seem to think. When was the last time you had a leather belt break? Even a thin one?
Stirrups can be even thinner, and yet carry half the weight of a man. I use a leather strap for my camera, because I can trust leather.

If something gives, it's going to be the strap hole or button. And there, the design of the strap button/lock system makes all the difference. Remember, even a super-wide strap is no wider at the button/lock hole than a narrow strap.

The only reasons to get a wider straps are looks and/or comfort.

I've had one for over 40 years and still have it! Those old skinny Fender straps are tough. Don't know about the new ones though. Could be made in China, who knows. I don't think I'd enlarge the whole though.
Mine's on my Supro. My Supro is fiberglass and pretty heavy too.
For the record, I've never used a commercial strap lock on any of my guitars and never dropped one. Way back I would either use one of those plastic bread bag clips or a rubber gasket from a bottle of Grolsch. I heven't done that is years though. I don't jump around when I play anymore, I'm too freakin old.

I do ride (horses) so I do understand your point about stirrups, however yes...I once had a stirrup break (although I can't say as to whether that was the leather or the buckle as it wasn't my horse...trail ride at a nearby stable...and yes, I damn near fell off the horse as it happened at a brisk canter). And yes, I have also had leather belts break too. While leather is generally "tough", it must also be noted that not all leather is created equal either. In terms of belts, try a "genuine leather" belt from Walmart compared with one from a decent leather shop...you'll get my point.

In either case, quite frankly I stand by my original comment. I do have one of those older thin straps as well (mine has a nice shoulder pad)...the strap came in a guitar case I picked up many years ago and to be blunt, I just won't use it. No...it hasn't broke...YET. On the other hand, I'm not gonna give it a chance to either...it's just not worth risking a guitar (or my toes) over.

Do what you want with your own guitars...strap locks or not, personally I'll stick with something beefier that I -KNOW- I can trust.
