Seeing how a few of you are interested in build logs I will be posting updates for my new build as it evolves. So anyway, I decided to start a new guitar project (making this my third fully documented build). However this one is a little different, even a tad unusual.

Being a Zappa fan I really like his ‘‘Baby Snakes SG’’.

This guitar is an oddball Gibson made by a fan in the late 70’s who sold it to him backstage. It had weird twists (23frets) and crazy electronics (4 different circuits: On board EQ, db booster, green ringer and pickups in series/parallel/split). This build is inspired by this guitar.

So it all started when I was cruising around and found this beautiful piece of wood… couldn’t resist.

So at the moment I’m waiting for it to arrive…
I was able to contact the gentleman who made it and I will be working with him on a custom neck that will match the body.

Now I will also be making an Armstrong Twin from scratch to mount it has on-board effect. The Armstrong Twin is a Green Ringer (famous Octavia) with an orange squeezer (famous compressor) they can work individually or mixed. The electronics won’t be the regular two volume two tones (never really liked that) instead there will be a master volume, a master tone and the two other pots will be for the Twin Armstrong. The on board effects will have a true bypass on/off switch that skips the circuit when off to prevent the battery from draining and a selector for (green ringer/ orangesqueezer/ mix). The pickup selection will be your typical neck/ both / bridge.

I’m still at the drawing board point right now and planning everything very carefully (having learned A LOT from past builds). I will have factory templates for routing so I’m not too worried although I do see a few challenges up ahead.

1. Never worked with blank
2. Never installed a set-neck… yet :) might consider bolt-on, but it wouldn’t be the same.
3. Never worked with a semi-hollow guitar.
4. Never had super complex electronics.
5. Debating on whether or not I will be making a control cavity or installing electronics like a regular semi-hollow (with harness and precision).

Lots of bumps on the road, right? Haha no problem I love this stuff!
Cheers,
p!

If you’re interested in what I’ve made before check out my other builds!

Yeah, that certainly is a nice looking body. I don't really have any experience with making my own at the moment, so I can't provide much insight, but keep us posted! Looks really promising.

That looks like it will be a nice guitar when it is done. I have a project (similiar in nature but no where near as well planned) that I have been putting off for about a year or so now. Reading threads like this give me some gumption to continue and some good ideas.
