Good to see your post James. Very sorry to hear that you've hurt your back. Be very careful with that. Get going with physical therapy asap. I didn't when it happened to me and kept working. The result I now have severe degenerative arthritis. Until 2007 I was my normal 6'3" and a quarter, now I'm almost 5'11" LOL. People that I haven't seen in awhile say " I remember you being much taller". They are right, but stuff happens when you aren't careful. You will find another job, take care of your back now though.

Sorry to hear your latest news. Each of us face such situations differently, but hoping you overcome both, and in short order. Though I am now retired, some years back, and middle age, I faced losing a job. However, as it turned out, in the long run, was a positive for me (and my family). Though there were some tough times in between. I secured a job with a company, which I was able excel and grow in, one that my former job would not have. 21 years later, retire from. I wish you the best.

That's cold!

I had a job once and a national company moved into town and coaxed most of our employees away. They hired a bunch of replacements and gave them to the loyal few who stayed to train - after telling them to keep secret that they were starting out at quite a bit more than those of us who had been there for years were getting. When the secret came out I quit and went to the new company. After 4 years there they decided to go with all part-time staff except for management so 10 people got pink-slipped without any notice and we got 20 part-timers to train. When they were trained another ten full-time employees got laid off and another 20 part-timers were hired to train. The union was protecting everyone who had been there for 5 years - I got my pink slip at 4 years and 10 months.

Still, those jobs were stepping stones to new and better paying jobs.

Maybe the back injury will lead to a Voc Rehab program that will take you to a new and better job that pays more and you like better than your old job.

Wow, that's pretty f'd up! I wonder if you have any recourse? Did you hurt yourself on the job? Any chance for some sort of disability if you did?

No, I actually pinched a nerve last Wednesday by putting the milk back into the fridge.

I was putting it away, then my whole back gave out and I collapsed at 5:00AM.

I tried to keep up with work this week, but I simply couldn't. It's all heavy lifting.

If your job was all heavy lifting, it's doubtful that putting the milk in the fridge caused the damage. It seems far more likely that the damage was caused by the heavy lifting, and that putting the milk in the fridge was what triggered the nerve pinch, not causing the damage that allowed it to happen. You really need to get a doctor's opinion on that. You may well have rights to compensation even if the symptoms did not start at work.

My first couple of jobs involved lifting/construction. It didn't take me too long to figure out that I needed to be in an office, not on a work site. So (lacking much useful education) I started working as a Telemarketer. It gave me enough experience to move on to working in Customer Service for a medical supplier. I did that for a while, and working my way up, had an opportunity to work as a Pharmacy Technician. Instead I went to business school at night for IT, and I've been in IT ever since.

You threw your back out. IMO, you should take it as a sign - get yourself a job where you don't trade your health for money. Best of luck to you, it's a long road but some day it will seem like it wasn't so bad.

And this.

You will never get anywhere working unskilled labor jobs. Sounds like a good time for education.

I was wondering what was going on with you since we haven't heard anything in awhile. It's been 9 months already? Time flies, that's for certain. Soon it begins. Hopefully, all will be well with you and your new family.

Oh yea, I forgot to say, we've been engaged for a bit. My grandma came down and gave us a lovely ring. Getting it sized and we'll have it after she has her. The jewelers said 2 weeks minimum on it.
