Hi

I have a brand new Fender Nashville B Bender Telecaster that was bought for me for Xmas. Because I don't play anymore I decided to sell it. So right now I have it listed on Craigslist. I cannot believe the number of people that for whatever reason are trying to play games on there. The "shipper pickup" scam is well now now. I had a few of those. But my latest inquiry is somewhat puzzling.

Starting yesterday, I had a inquiry from someone who claims to live a few hours away. We emailed back and forth a few times. Last night they requested the serial number for the guitar to be able to check it out. That sounds reasonable to me. But since I am careful, I basically was blunt with them. Stating that I have dealt with alot of scammers on there. And that I will need either an ISP email address or their mobile text number to send the serial number to. They tried to assure me that they were legit. And they gave me a mobile number that is located in the area they claim to be. The oddest thing here is that they write like a child and seem typical of an asian person trying to pull a scam. Here are a couple of lines of texts from them to give you an idea:

"Before I buy can I have serial num so u can google the guitar I can tell it's the real deal but I have to drive a long ways it will make me feel better thank u"

"I don't no what ISP is so hers my num XXXXXX XXXX I couldn't scam an dog more less a person I've have been scammed some china guy I think I trying that no over a guitar case please sent num text or call me that way u will no"

Anyway. I feel like I am possibly dealing with someone up to no good. But the bigger question is why would they want the serial number if they aren't a serious buyer? What can they really do with it? I not only have registered it with Fender. But I also have the invoice from AMS that proves it was purchased late last year. And I have all the packaging that goes with it. So they sure can't try to say I stole it from them and prove it.

Any insight? I seriously want to get this sold to help buy a truck.

Craigslist is getting very bad indeed. Just give them the first few digits, that's enough for them to verify year of manufacture.
I live in St. Louis and the adds here are nuts. Many obvious fakes (Fender water slides on not even Squiers) , prices more than what they cost new, old junk as rare collector pieces, sob stories, selling for a friend or deceased father, ect. I always do homework on EBay, and Reverb to compare before I get excited. Thankfully I only had to go about a mile the other day to pick up good deal on a guitar, when I meet the guy he told me he just had a full price offer??? Craigslist can be a great place but getting fewer and further in between. Another thing, don't have anyone come to your home, meet somewhere neutral.

Yeah, another thing you got to watch your arse when you're dealing on there, especially if you're meeting up with someone to sell or buy. I've sold a couple of things on there, but made sure it was in a very public area with people around, like a parking lot to a store that's open.

You do have to be careful. I have sold a couple items but have access to check them out before I set a date for a meet up.

There are some crazies out there...here is an ad I ran across after seeing your post. Sometimes I think you can tell a lot about someone, just by the way they post their ad. Check this nut job out.

https://stlouis.craigslist.org/msg/4921986176.html

He lists it for dead mint price when it is beat to $@!&, has blatantly false information (year of manufacture, but can't back it up) and his write up makes me go...Hmmmm? (Not in a good way). All that makes me go, pass on this nut job.

FWIW

I sell stuff on Craigslist successfully. Here is my answer to people when they inquire.

1) Cash only in full at the time of sale, all sales final.
2) I live in a gated community. so I need the license plate number of the car you are driving in here and your full name as it reads on your drivers license.

If number 1 don't weed them out number 2 does. Both are true. I only accept cash, and I do live in a gated community which will not let anyone in unless they have been cleared by me.

Paraphrased.
"I am away from home for a little time, I will send you a cashiers check, and I will send a friend of mine to pick up the item.

The cashiers check bounces a week or two after you give the item to the "friend".

Had one really good experience on CR. Went to a guy's house (in town). Took cash. He actually WAS selling it for the widow of a friend. But he had some nice gear hanging around and obviously played. So I think I got a steal on my amazing MIM HSS Strat.
It IS a weird way to do business but sometimes you just have to go with your instincts!

I would never give anyone the serial number to any piece of gear. They could turn around and call the police and say that you stole it by using the number as reference on their part. I always ask for a name and phone number if I'm going to sell on there and I always make it a point to meet in a public place and always bring someone with me. Do cash only and be smart.

Me too, I refused that one myself. It creeped me out too, I later sold the item (properly purchased by me and I could prove it).

We here in Colorado have just had a crazy incident where a lady was selling baby clothes. The lady was pretending to be pregnant with the intention of cutting a baby out of a pregnant mom who would come to buy baby clothes from her. Since she had been pretending for months (even to her husband) that she was pregnant, the plan was no one would be surprised she suddenly had a baby. She ended up cutting the baby out (which died), and the mother barely lived. So ... the moral of the story is ... be careful selling to people on Craigslist.

that made the news here in NY, 01GT eibach. Also there was a possible serial killer in Long Island that apparently used CL to find victims.

Once I met someone at their house to pick up a drum machine I got on Ebay. I don't think I'd pick up that way anymore. :?
