I am a bit bewildered that this isn't available on DVD!.

The DVD is supposed to be released the middle of June. A 4 CD set of the music is also planned.

"Hey Hey We're the Monkeys. We're too busy singing... to play our own instruments" Well for the first album or 2 anyway.

Sacreligious I know but I wonder if the Beatles were actually the musicians in the studio after they stopped touring, or did they just do the writing and the vocals?

Well, if you can believe Songfacts, they played:

This song especially, has some interesting 'songfacts':

Seems like I remember hearing in one interview where one of them said that the only time an outside guitar player joined them in the studio was when they invited Clapton in for While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

That was 'invitation by George', as I've heard it tell. Well the jibe, on my part, was well worth the comebacks. However, bear in mind that, in the end, there WAS a Fifth Beatle. Sir George Martin. 8)

Perhaps, another Beatle (sic) would be Billy Preston for "Get Back"? As a session musician for many individuals and groups, he also has the credit of 'Beatles with Billy Preston'. Preston later teamed up with George after the Liverpool 4 broke up.

Brotherdave pretty much says it all. Sometimes, a session band will have one leader who will only use the same musicians, or shuffle the group according to needs. His or her name may be the only additional credit because of arrangement, identity profile, lack of label space, or a host of reasons. In TV, often time makes credit limitations. Think of all the unannounced backup singers (again some prefer it that way. It can also open doors).

And yes, brotherdave is correct that session musicians of a similar calibre and history can be found elsewhere. They might be your neighbour. 8)

Sometimes, I think we are too hard on performers that fell into the same session band scenario the Monkees are blamed with. While it's true that without the Funk Brothers, and Wrecking Crew, things would have been different . . . different is the key word. What would it have been without the performer, or if Hendrix sat in for a Wrecking Crew member. Who knows. Fortunately, the music was made, and both performers and session musicians made it happen, usually under the control of a producer and distributor, and these are the dudes that molded careers for better or worse.

I enjoyed the Funk Brothers, Muscle Shoals, and Sound City, amongst other related documentaries, and I look forward to catching The Wrecking Crew's. For now I'll go back to playing
