While reading Guitar World, Kisses', Tommy Thayler was asked 7 questions. It got me thinking about these questions and how I might answer them. Now I want to ask everyone here on the forum the very same questions. Copy, paste and answer the questions listed below.

1. What inspired you to play the guitar (bass)?
2. What do you remember about your first guitar (bass)?
3. What was the first song you learned?
4. Do you rememeber your first time on stage?
5. Ever have an embarrassing moment on stage?
6. What is your favorite piece of gear?
7. Do you have any advice for young players?

Here are my answers

1. What inspired you to play the guitar (bass)?

I'm left handed, but didn't have a teacher. I knew othere people who were learning or played, but no one could teach me. One day I just got fed up of seeing other people playing. I grabbed my dad's U.S. made Harmony acoustic guitar, opened up a Beatle's song book, learned to play righthanded .

2. What do you remember about your first guitar (bass)?

The very first guitar I owned was $35 student Harmony acoustic from "BEST." My first electric guitar was a Peavey T-26. The my $35 guitar was impossible to play so I used my dad's. He sounded great and had kind of flat neck.

3. What was the first song you learned?

"Across the Universe," by the Beatle's

4. Do you rememeber your first time on stage?

It was a little scary, but I loved it. Time sped up and three songs took about 2 minutes to do. I played some lead, but leaned heavely on playing rhythm. We were a pretty diverse group of players, death metal, heavy metal, pop and me into classic rock. The lead singer had the whole Billy Joel thing going on, so it was a little strange doing Cream and the Police while the lead singer paced back and forth on the stage sounding like Bill Joel. It was an Army talent contect and we won.

5. Ever have an embarrassing moment on stage?

I was in a classic rock band on rhythm guitar. We were playing to about 200-300 people, and in the middle of Grand Funk Railroad's, "I'm Your Captain." Right when the solo acoustic guitar comes back from sudden break in the middle of the song, I fell asleep at the wheel. Everyone stopped playing, and I didn't start. There I was standing on stage with a big pause and not doing anything. The band turned to look at me like, "Well?"

Oh Yah, you're waiting on me, oops. Realizing that I goofed, didn't panic and just started playing.

6. What is your favorite piece of gear?

This is a tough one. I'd have to go with my '75 sunburst Strat with rosewood fingerboard. The neck is nice, round and slim. The pickups are very responsive to how I play and as close the sound I think of when I hear an old vintage Strat.

7. Do you have any advice for young players?

I have two bits of advice. First, be yourself. Find your own voice and style. It's great to learn how your heroes play, but when you find your voice, you are truly doing something new and unique. One of the greatest compliments I ever received was when our church music director (who does not give out complements lightly) told me, "Whenever I hear your band play, I always know where you are. You stand out." Secondly, a vastly overlooked part of great sound and tone comes two places, your finger tips and a good quality amp. Great guitars can sound like crap in the wrong hands or through a crap amp. Some of the most important aspects of how a person plays is really in the hand he or she strums with, not the other hand.

More years ago than I care to reveal we were playing a bar mitzvah a local country club. The guest of honor's parents were two-stepping close to my side of the stage as we belted out Bob Seger's "Down On Mainstreet". The woman was wearing an inordinate amount of a really pungent perfume which ultimately caused me to sneeze, launching a Minuteman-sized snot rocket which impacted somewhere on her shoulder. I'm just glad that both their heads were turned to the rear of the hall to watch their son enjoy his first dance-floor sortie. Otherwise, we might not have gotten paid.

My Dad got me started, some Navy buddies that played got me back into it.
First guitar was an Applause. Kinda like Ovation's version of a Squier.
First song I picked out myself and learned was Heart of Gold by Neil Young.
First time on stage I was so afraid of making a mistake my eyes hardly left my fretting hand.
Embarrassing moment... Had a guitar with a really worn jack and once when I finished a set I noticed that my cord was just hanging from where I had tucked it through the strap. Was a heel mount and the weight of the connector pulled it right out. I was in a dead area and couldn't hear myself anyway so I have no idea when it came out. Halfway through the first song, almost the end of the last.
Favorite piece of gear would have to be my custom Tele. Made by a guy that has also made guitars for Clapton, Joe Walsh, Megadeath and a bunch of others.
Advise for younger players: Don't let finger pain limit your practice time. Learn how to set your guitar up correctly or have someone else do it for you. Learning doesn't have to hurt, is just that most people start out on a cheaper guitar that needs a proper setup. It isn't just a case of building up calluses. Also, the more I use my modeling amp the more I think that they aren't good for new players starting out. I learned electric through my ss acoustic amp and had to really work on technique.
Anyone can pick out a preset and make "some cool sounding noise".

I know Applause. A friend of mine, swears by them.

1. What inspired you to play the guitar (bass)?

Well, it was a friend of mine when I was 16 years old who started playing guitar and suggested that we put a band together. At first, I thought about playing the drums, but that really wasn't feasible, so I decided to take up the bass guitar. To be honest, I really didn't know anything about since since I wasn't musically inclined, but I was artistic/creative. Before music, I wanted to either be a cartoonist or artist or a writer. Music was a more viable medium to express myself.

2. What do you remember about your first guitar (bass)?

It was the cheapest one in the store, since I didn't know I'd even stick with it (go figure on that one 26+ years later non stop :P ) and that happen to be a Peavey Fury bass. Not too shabby, but right after it and when the music bug bit hard, a 1977 Fender Jazz Bass and a Aria Pro Cardinal Series bass. Then it was a 1971 Rickenbacker 4001 and a bunch of other stuff.

3. What was the first song you learned?
I've always wrote original music and didn't really play covers, but on a few occasions. I think the first song was "With Or With Out You" by U2. It probably is the easiest song to play, other than Van Halen's "Running With The Devil." :P

4. Do you remember your first time on stage?

Well, technically the first gig was this house party I played with in around 1990. It was great fun and I had a recording of it for many years, and there might be a video still around somewhere. Probably not, though. If you're talking about a professional stage with lights and sound, that was a couple years and a different band later. I remember getting roasted by the lights on my back and I was sweating my arse off. :P

5. Ever have an embarrassing moment on stage?

Not embarrassing, but there's been a few times where I was pissed off because of certain wankers I had to deal with, including some people involved at a festival my girlfriend and I played at a few years back. I will say this, the best revenge is success. It's a good thing to live by.

6. What is your favorite piece of gear?

I'd say my Schecter Diamond J Bass and my Orange Terror Bass 1000 watt stack. I love 'em both and feel it's the best gear I've had so far.

7. Do you have any advice for young players?

Don't even bother. I'm joking! :P Seriously, just play from the heart and do what you want to do. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. Try to have fun, too. Life's too short for BS. If you really want to do something with it, then think big and don't sell yourself short. Don't bother with doing anything local, unless you are in a good location. Think outside the box.

Another thing, don't get married and wind up with crotch fruit, if you are a serious musician and want to make something of it. It will hold you back, unless there is some work around to where you can tour (usually unlikely,) because that's how you are going to get known. I've seen many people get stopped because of that. Of course, if that's what you want, then there's nothing wrong with that either, but you have to be realistic about things. You either want something or you don't and you can't let others try to stop you. There will be those that will, trust me on that one.

Go for it! I did, even though I'm not 100% there yet, but I've managed to accomplish a lot in my career. It's not easy, though. Especially these days where musicians are reduced to e-begging to put out an album, even one's who have had hit songs, albeit in the 80's. Then again, it never was.

First time on stage was in a church hall, a practice session I was told, Sultans of Swing, Black Magic Woman and Albatross were some of the songs I had just started to tackle a week or so before, didn't know the drummer had invited someone to check us out. At the end he went out to talk to him and a sideways glance in my direction with the immortal line " you need to get shot of the lead guitarist" rang out, needless to say my van was never called on again or my lead guitar skills. Nothing became of them either btw

1. What inspired you to play the guitar (bass)?

I just had to. I grew up listening to the Beatles and later discovered some more heavy stuff. To the other people's ears it was just music, to me it was "it". I had to play the guitar.

2. What do you remember about your first guitar (bass)?

It was a very cheap acoustic that my old man had around, with a red top, nylon strings. That's what made me make my first C chord.

3. What was the first song you learned?

Acoustically, a estudio by Rovira. Electric, Cocaine, by Clapton.

4. Do you rememeber your first time on stage?

yes. An acoustic duo.

5. Ever have an embarrassing moment on stage?

No. I never stepped on the stage without having enough rehearsals.

6. What is your favorite piece of gear?

I don't consider my guitars "gear", they're my lovers. So, it has to be my Orange Amp.

7. Do you have any advice for young players?

If you really love your music and your instrument, don't ever quit. And if you don't love it all, just want to do it because it's cool or whatever, PLEASE do quit. You're wasting your time.

Good one!
1. What inspired you to play the guitar (bass)?
Playing air-guitar just wasn't cutting it any more.
Picked up a strat for my 50th without knowing a lick of music (no ten impunded)

2. What do you remember about your first guitar (bass)?
A 2010 MIM HSS, why did it look so different than the SSS? Is it a fake

3. What was the first song you learned?
Just started making up my own melodies.

4. Do you rememeber your first time on stage?
Yes, nervous at first, but luckily it was in front of a group of chilled-out meditative new-agers, so the vibe was contagious.

5. Ever have an embarrassing moment on stage?
I totally blanked-out and forgot what I was playing... luckily the audience had no idea what I was playing

6. What is your favorite piece of gear?
2011 MIM HSH Blacktop Strat with Eventide Space Reverb and EH Sitar effects

7. Do you have any advice for young players?
No, but I do for old geezers like me:
"Don't start telling me that you're too old to start, stuff."

Thanks for letting me play

1. What inspired you to play the guitar (bass)?
Probably watching my two oldest sisters go crazy when The Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan show. I was (still am) the baby of the family and vaguely remember it as I was just a little kid. I soon started tinkering around on my sisters acoustic guitar when she wasn't around, and plinked out melodies of songs that I heard.

2. What do you remember about your first guitar (bass)?
It was a cheap acoustic that my mom bought at either Sears or Montgomery Ward. I forget the brand name - if it even had one. I started taking lessons with my older sister too. She and the instructor (who she babysat for too) were all into folk music and Peter, Paul, and Mary, and stuff like that. I got frustrated because I was sitting there strumming along to:
"I've looked at clouds from both sides now / From up and down and still somehow / It's cloud's illusions I recall / I really don't know clouds at all"
When in my mind, I wanted to rock out big time...
"Purple haze, all in my brain / Lately things they don't seem the same / Actin' funny, but I don't know why / 'cuse me while I kiss the sky"
Nevertheless, I lasted about a year or two with lessons and then somehow, someway, I decided to "cut loose" on acoustic and blew my sister away. But pi$$ed off the instructor to where she told me, "I think you should move on and switch to electric".

3. What was the first song you learned?
"Michael, Row Your Boat Ashore"... Good God, I think I'm still traumatized from it! :P

4. Do you remember your first time on stage?
Yup... High school in the late 70's... A high school buddy (who played drums left handed) and I hung around a lot. He taught me drums (lefty -- which I still play to this day), and I taught him righty guitar (which he still plays too). We decided to enter the high school talent contest as a duo. He was on drums and I was on guitar. We both sang and did BTO's song "Takin' Care of Business". A cool thing that we worked up was during that section of the tune where all you hear are drums... I put my guitar down in its stand ran over to his drum kit. We timed it so that I would stand there like, ...2...3...4 *SNATCH* and I grabbed his high hat drum stick and played high hat. He got off the drum throne, and I quickly sat down, retaining the bass drum beat, and grabbed his snare stick. I kept the same beat that he did, and he went over to my guitar, and started up again with the same trademark rhythm "C, Bb, F" guitar chords, and we finished the song like that. It was a huge hit and everyone loved it! 8)

5. Ever have an embarrassing moment on stage?
OMG, yes... Later on in life, during my career in the Coast Guard, I got asked to play lead guitar on occasion in a local bar band in town. The USCG didn't seem to mind, as long as I reported for duty bright and early on Monday mornings. Anyway, I was on stage with the band, and I think we were playing "Tush" by ZZ Top. I was on slide guitar doing my best to match Billy Gibbons slide licks, when I just happen to look out onto the floor and there was this drunk chick looking right at me, dancing away. She started rubbing the inside of her thighs and was blowing kisses at me. I didn't know what to do, and according to the story, the band said I just stopped cold and was as beet red as a tomato! They all fell out laughing and quit the rest of the song!

6. What is your favorite piece of gear?
After careful thought, I guess it would be my BYOC Classic Overdrive pedal. It is special to me, because I built it from scratch out of a kit from BYOC. I am a little colorblind and can't make out the color patterns on resistors, but I wanted to prove to myself that I could overcome this obstacle. No matter what it takes, I wanted to build my own guitar pedal. I used a digital multimeter and carefully measured the Ohms of each resistor and labeled each one. Then one by one, piece by piece, slowly and steadily, I built my own pedal. AND IT WORKS!

7. Do you have any advice for young players?
Never give up! Take things slow and you'll be able to do it. Be diverse too - don't "pigeonhole" yourself. Learn old school Rockabilly, Jazz rock, Blues, Country Rock, Metal, etc...

1. What inspired you to play the guitar (bass)?
A girl in my class, and easily the most beautiful girl I ever met. Granted, this was in junior high, and I do not want to know what she looks like now. In my memory, she's still the prettiest.

2. What do you remember about your first guitar (bass)?
It was an acoustic with an adjustable bridge.

3. What was the first song you learned?
Greensleeves. And boy, did it hurt young fingers.

4. Do you rememeber your first time on stage?
Yes, playing in a youth competition. 4th place.
I remember that I could not see the audience at all due to the spotlight. It never occurred to me that I could move.

5. Ever have an embarrassing moment on stage?
That would be the time my kid brother had buttered my violin bow.
Other than that, the one time I mimed "roadhouse blues", and the drummer launched into 6/8.

6. What is your favorite piece of gear?
A handmade sheet music book that someone dear to me made. Only very special songs get written into it.

7. Do you have any advice for young players?
Do sports to get the girls and study law to get the dough.

1. What inspired you to play the guitar (bass)?
A. A basement band was a group bonding thing.
B. To get girls to hang out with us.
C. The guy that taught me the basics of guitar could play almost any stringed instrument (I recall that he owned a Mustang guitar, an upright acoustic bass, and a pedal steel guitar), and he had Cerebral Palsy.

2. What do you remember about your first guitar (bass)?
A Japanese copy of a P-bass, and the key/button/whatever for the G string machine head was loose. I had to wrap a bit of duct tape on or else it would resonate and rattle like mad on certain notes. If I knew then what I know now, I would have just whacked it with a centre punch to tighten the rivet head.

3. What was the first song you learned?
Hard to say, but my first lengthy song with a bunch of different parts for the bass was "I'm Your Captain", by Grand Funk Railroad. I was lucky to make it through without getting lost.
Other songs were simpler in structure, like "Green Onions", "Hey Joe", "Midnight Hour", "Mustang Sally", "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl",

4. Do you remember your first time on stage?
A pre-teen dance at the local community hall. They loved us.

5. Ever have an embarrassing moment on stage?
Nope. I stay off it.

6. What is your favorite piece of gear?
Headphones, for guitar or bass, because I can crank it up without disturbing anybody. I am my favourite (and usually only) audience.

7. Do you have any advice for young players?
For rock: "Play it like you mean it." Don't be tentative.
In general though, younger kids I know that take lessons (piano, guitar, fiddle, etc.) tend to get the right notes and in the right order, but they don't quite have the rhythm down, especially if there are triplets or something. It's as if they just want to get it over with. If I was their teacher, I'd ask them to first play a tune by tapping it out on a table top or the back of the instrument.

1. What inspired you to play the guitar (bass)?

I was a direct product of the Beatles and the british invasion.

2. What do you remember about your first guitar (bass)?

I don't remember the make/model but I started on bass using my best friend's father's bass and his Supro amp.

3. What was the first song you learned?

I believe it was 'Rain' by the Beatles

4. Do you rememeber your first time on stage?

I think it was probably a garage concert for our neighborhood friends.

5. Ever have an embarrassing moment on stage?

Either I haven't had one or it was so devastating I blocked it from my memory.

6. What is your favorite piece of gear?

My Mustang IV version II amp. It simplified my life considerably.

7. Do you have any advice for young players?

There is no piece of gear that will make you a better player no matter how exotic or expensive. The only thing that does that is practice and study. And if all you do is emulate others you won't be anything special regardless of how good you are, so focus on developing YOUR distinctive technique and sound.
