I'm not afraid to play very expensive instruments, but I'd be sure as hell paranoid to play them live. As it is, I watch my gear like a hawk when I'm doing a gig. That would suck to have something stolen, especially if it has any sort of value to it.

A lifetime of experience has taught me that the greatest risk to musical instruments aren't thieves, but relatives, singers and pets.

At a gig, there hopefully won't be a lot of relatives and pets.
But when a singer puts a beverage on your amp or keyboard, turns around so the mic cable goes around it, and walks to the front, "I'm sorry" doesn't cut it. And a guitar case might be sturdy, but not meant for people to sit on. If I weren't such a nice person, I'd like to swap the +48V for 120V AC and say "I'm sorry".

I Remember changing my way of thinking due to Ibanez.

There was a time when I REALLY wanted an expensive RG or Jem. It was back in the earlier Floyd versions when there wasn't much difference between them.

When I tried out the expensive ones compared to the mid level, I could close my eyes and not feel one bit of difference. The expensive models had DiMarzios instead of the INF pickups, but I couldnt feel any difference.

And I remember thinking, "Wow, what a rip. They put a couple DiMarzios in it and slap another $900 on the price tag?? Screw that." And I bought an RG 550 for $200 at a Pawn shop and put a couple Dimarzios in it.

At the time, I thought, "What a lot of nerve to ask $1,700 for essentially the same guitar." And I never looked back.

Seconded. Ibanez RGs are fabulous guitars, even the lower priced ones. And for shredding, I'll take an Ibanez RG over pretty much anything else, including Schechter, Washburn, ESP and PRS.

The only metal shredder guitar Fender has is the Jim Root Jazzmaster at $1500 - I'm sure it's nice, and I like the minimalism, but is it really worth twice the price of an Ibanez RG Iron Label with Gotoh locking tuners and the same EMG pickups?

I've been rockin' this guitar since I got it in 2011.
I play it more than my Am Std Strat or Tele and my Les Paul Studio.
The best thing about it is the neck.

Here's a couple more I play. No gear snobbery here.
I have a new and improved version coming soon. I just made some design changes that I think will make it more stable and stay in tune better. I bough a new neck for it because the original is twisted and has a problematic truss rod. But you'll get the gist of it. I cherish these more than any of the guitars I've ever bought.

Here's my Tele I built too. A seriously nice player.

That reminds me, are you familiar with Super Chikan? http://www.superchikan.com/ He's this blues dude that builds guitars out of all kinds of stuff like gas cans, cigar boxes, and an actually toilet seat that he calls his "shitar."

Yep, I met James Johnson aka Super Chikan at the Pocono Blues Festival some years back. He's a great person and a really great Blues guitarist. He was playing a BC Rich guitar in the tent. He told me about his guitars. He said when stuff breaks he hates throwing it out so he recycles it. I have some photos of him. Shot them on film. Just about any guitar built from anything that has to do with deification is a "Shitar" or a "Crapocaster" . he didn't have his chicken with him.

Buddy Guy left the sunburst Strat from the A Man And The Blues at home because he was afraid it would get stolen on the road - then someone broke into his house and stole it while he was on tour. Never can tell when or where thieves will strike!

Yeah, I'd love to have him make me one of those gas can basses. That would be seriously cool.

You do have a point there. That's why we have locks on the studio door in the house. It's at least an extra deterrent besides alarms.

Dogs work great too. More expensive than alarms - you have to pay someone to feed, walk and pet them when away, but they really work. Most burglars will pass on to the next house if they hear multiple deep barks.
