I'm thinking of getting a compact head, to carry to rehearsals and use with the supplied cabinets. One of my choices is the Mesa Boogie Mark Five 25.
My main question is what is the advantage to having both the standard tone knobs and the sliders? Is this a helpful feature to anyone that owns a Mesa?
What do you tube freaks think of this particular amp. It only weighs 16.5# and has a lot of features.

I've never heard that particular amp. I did have a Studio 22+ for a while that had the sliders. You start with that "V" shape, then tweak if you feel it needs it. It is a nice feature to have. It can help fine tune to speakers.

I wasn't really into the Studio very much. It sounded like a toy compared to a Peavey Delta. So I sold it.

But given the models they're listing as to what it's cloning, that would be a superb amp. Hefty price tag on it, but it could be worth it. I'd love to compare one side-by-side to a Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister 36.

I definitely like the description of the Mesa. I've been a fan of their amps for years. Some hits and misses like every amp manufacturers, but that one would have my interest for sure.

My second choice is a Carvin V3M, which is also a very nice mini amp, for a lot less money. What keeps me interested in the Mesa is those six amps they cloned the circuits of, for the six modes, and the tube reverb. If it's as great as it seems it might be, I would forget about the extra cost pretty quick. But I've had good luck with Carvin, and it's less than half. I can't test drive the Carvin. There is a slight chance I might be able to find the Mesa Boogie to try. They have a company store near me. Their products always seem to catch my attention.

Yea, when I read that list of clones, I was a bit surprised myself. If they effectively pulled that off, I might consider one myself. That would be an ultimate studio amp. And the tube reverb is definitely a plus.

Live could prove to be a little less versatile than as a studio amp though. If the channels share the slider EQ, you could find yourself settling between sounds for the sake of finding happy mediums. I have to do that with my current H&K Triamp MK1. The MK3 rectifies that situation. But I have a feeling that live, you'd be keeping the sliders in the V-shape and basically rendering it useless. It doesn't mean you wouldn't have good sounds to choose from, but keep that in mind. The Mesa Studio had some major issues being used as a live amp switching from clean to dirty. I would suspect however that this Mark V doesn't have those particular issues, but possibly the same with sharing the sliders.

Another nice feature is the tube effects loop. I LOVED the loop on my old Mesa DR. I put a 6201/12at7 in the loop V-Slot, and the effects were fantastic!!

Yeah, it seems like quite a nice little amp. It may be more than I really need. For less than half, the Carvin is looking pretty good. I've played their amps, and I know I'd be happy with it. It's three channels, 1" wider and 2.5# heavier, but still in the realm of what I'm looking for. I'll probably decide Monday. Maybe I'll hit the lottery this weekend.
