T-Bone Wolk, longtime bass player for Hall & Oates, gone but not forgotten. There aren't too many pop groups on my short list, Hall and Oates is right up there though. Rest easy T-Bone.

He died five years ago, Feb 28th, 2010. One of those sudden massive heart attacks. He was more than H&O's bassist. He had also been their musical director and played a multitude of instruments, not just bass. He first was an accordion prodigy, went to guitar from there and then bass. He could play about any instrument with strings, keys or skins. He worked on dozens of projects from Carly Simon to Elvis Costello to Billy Joel to Avril Lavigne and he also produced projects. He may not have innovated it himself but did more to popularize the P/J bass pickup arrangement than any other player because his #1 was a Precision Bass with a P/J customization and he played it weekly on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" with G.E. Smith from 1986 till 1992 when having a P/J setup was only available as an aftermarket modification. Eventually on H&O tours including the awesome 2008 tour that produced the "LIVE AT THE TROUBADOUR" video and 3 disc album he was playing acoustic/electric Spanish guitar (quite well) and singing backup (also quite well) having turned over the tour bass slot to fellow session bassist Zev Katz. I really liked T-Bone Wolk too because it is hard not to like someone who came up with the iconic bassline to "Maneater." Daryl Hall said Wolk was actually the ampersand in Hall & Oates. At the time of his death he was working on a solo project of his own that remains unfinished.

Yeah, I was confused about that. It was 2010 he died? Wow, time flies. I thought it was only a year or two ago for some reason.

Yep time does fly and it was 2010. Also after leaving SNL G.E. Smith joined Wolk with H&O until leaving to form his own band. The G.E. Smith Band is still touring. Wolk & Smith were sort of the Dunn & Cropper of the NY studio scene in the 80's and 90's as you seldom saw project credit for one without also seeing the other. The were rock solid gold when playing together and the absolute pinnacle of professionalism live or in the studio. On lists of "best" guitarists and bassists or ones that are "underrated" their names seldom appear, but should. As a rule NYC session players just don't get the credit or glory but many NYC cats like Wolk and Smith play at such a high level leaving them off those lists is just an innocent oversight.

An anniversary posting, I searched and could not find the original thread. Good catch brotherdave. 5 years isn't as long as it sounds.

That's true there.
