I originally did try a JJ 12 AX7 that I bought brand new off of E-Bay several months ago after I had gotten the amp but, after a month or so, the quality of the tube started to go. I'm assuming that I was sold a bad tube but, I decided this time to go with Groove Tubes and I'm not disappointed at all . The 12AX7 R-3 has breathed new life into my amp . I still have the original Fender 12AX7 that came with my amp and still is functional , so I'm not throwing that away. I want to see how long the new tube lasts. If I can get a couple of years out of it, then I'll be happy.

Sure you can get a bad tube from any manufacturer. And most of the "manufacturers" are really just slapping their name and logo on tubes from a couple of common factories anyhow.
But what differs is quality control. How well they check the tubes, binning, and how much of a yield loss they are willing to accept. A company that scraps 10% of the production might have better quality on what remains for sale than one that scraps 1%, and that can justify a price difference.

From personal experience, the only company I haven't had a bad tube from is Telefunken. But now I have probably jinxed myself, and the next one will be bad. :D

Arth, they all go bad eventually. Some just take longer than others.

I happen to use mostly JJ's. But the same holds true..........replace the pi tube 1st.

JJ's in all my amps with a NOS JAN Phillips 5751 tossed in here and there.

Why would you do that? If I have a failing tube in V2, I should replace the PI? I'm not sure what you mean by that advice. Maybe you can elaborate a little.

Personally, I'm a NOS guy with my preamps. The only modern tubes I use are in the power section.

It was mentioned before that Telefunkens are durable, and I would agree with that. But I can also get the same durability out of GE 12ax7s @ $15-20 a piece. GE 12ax7a, Sylvania JHS, RCA 7025, all have good track records in my amps. You can get these for about half the cost of Telefunken. But I do love the Teles. They come out when it's time to record.

I usually replace all of the tubes in my amps any time I think a particular amp needs a tube change. I can afford a full set every few years, it always improves my tone a bit. Many times the preamp tubes last longer than the power tubes, so if I think it is only the power tubes, I may just but those in matched pairs. But if you don't abuse the amp, tubes can last quite a long time.

Having played SS most of my life , I'll admit that I'm a total noob when it comes to tubes. Maybe I just had a bad tube as some suggested , when the JJ went on me but , I'm totally happy with the GT 12AX7 R-3 and seeing that it's only a preamp tube , I'm sure it'll last a long time. I have noticed a huge difference in the sound with this tube compared to the stock Fender that was with it.
