I just installed a couple of days ago , a brand new, Groove Tubes 12AX7 R3 in my 1996 Fender Roc-Pro 700 combo and I can not believe the difference in the sound of my amp. It blows away the JJ I had bought a few months ago and decimates the stock Fender tube that was in the amp originally. Not only is there a increase in volume but, the cleans are more pronounced and the Gain is more powerful as well. I'm sure this post will probably have Shimmilou going " what again ? " , but I just had to let everyone know how great these tubes are ! By the way, I ended up selling my 1988 Fender Studio 85 last night for a undisclosed sum to a private party. I was trying to get a trade for a MIM Standard Strat but, nobody would bite. Oh well, maybe I'll see about getting one of those Squier Vintage Modified Strats to add to the collection now.

Good ,

We never know before how tubes will sound in a amp .

And it is a matter of taste too.

JJ's may sound better than GT in other amp .

Inclined to think the GT's are simply higher output compared to the older JJ's.
My experience has mostly been (but not always), that new preamp tubes with higher gain tend to drop after a month or two.....and hopefully settle.
A fresh pi tube usually suffices to up your gain with settled preamp tubes.

GT do not make tubes , GT bought tubes from tube 's manufacturer like Sovtek and ...JJ's ?

I realize that. Just sayin that replacing your pi tube 1st is often the cure for an amp's lethargic performance in my experience.

For me, it really depends on the amp, and I find that generally, there is no "one brand fits all" as far as tubes are concerned. That is one of the reasons that I like GT so much, they use a variety of brands (flavors) to suit most anyone's needs, and it's easy to choose the right ones if you are familiar with the labels.

I still try as many different types of tubes that I can in each particular amp to find the combination of preamp and output tubes that is just right. Once I find a great combination of tubes for a particular model of amp, I generally use the same tubes in every other amp of the same model.

After a while, it becomes like a second nature to know, for example, that a Chinese preamp tube will sound fantastic in an Orange Tiny Terror, but maybe not the best choice in a Fender Bassman (taste being subjective of course).
