Volume knob is a far more effective and useful tool.

+1 on this - would have included that in my previous post, but once in a lifetime wanted to stay ontopic.

When performing or gigging, never. When chasing a particular tone for recording, yes. I'll explore the tone knob - among other things.

I agree with the recording usefulness (whether you want to get close to covering an artist's tone or simply to add variation to a chosen amp setting).

I use the tone controls on the axe to take the edge off of the digital brightness on my solid state amp, but there are other similar scenarios where it could be helpful.

The volume knob does have some bearing too, however.

Yes I use the tone knob, especially when it sounds a little too piercing. It takes a bit of the top end off if it becomes too much.
Once in a while I like to drop the tone to 0 and crank the drive. I love that sound!

Thought that I responded to this. Yes I use the tone knobs. The one exception is the old Fender custom shop jazz bass my friend has, no volume or tone knobs. Amazing sound from that bass guitar. I'm not sure it could work the same with a guitar though.

Only on the bridge pickup. I have my Strat bridge pup wired to the middle tone. Makes a hell of a difference.

While tone control is an option for amps, it is the same setting for all the pups. It is nice to have the option to give that amp's preset tone more flexibility, without having to go to the amp, and to have the option to pick tones that may or may not match when switching the bridge, middle, and neck pups. IMHO

+1 The old 90's "Delta Tone" circuit....

On my '95 Strat, I always have my settings somewhere around:
Volume: 8
Tone 1: 8 (neck, neck & middle)
Tone 2: 7 (middle, middle & bridge, and bridge)

I play with a cheap Frontman 65r solid state, so naturally I want to back it off a little to cut down the brightness.

Generally I leave them at 10, except for the one on my VM Jag SS bass, which I typically have at 5 or 10.
I think though, I'm going to move my Strat's middle tone to the bridge pickup, to cut down on the "ice pick in the ear" that I get with some Mustang I amp presets.

I use the tone knobs occasionally. Typically, I leave them alone with any given guitar and amp combination. But there are times when I use Guitar "X" for a song I usually play with "Y" and then I might experiment with the tone. For the most part though, I'm boringly consistent in how I have everything set ... unless I decide to materially change the way I want a song sounding.

You know, if you just asked if you use your knob, this conversation could take on a whole different meaning and probably not appropriate for this forum, I'm sure. :P

Yes, on a Precision bass guitar there is a sweet spot. Room size lets you dial it in at sound check. Unless you are wide open, then to quote Jimi, "watch out for your ears".
