Guess the question is mainly for those that don't gig and can easily use their amp to change the sound. I was wondering if a more direct signal minus the tone pot has any advantage? Some people wire their Telecasters so the switch can bypass the tone pot, and I have an Esquire that can also bypass the tone control. I bring this up because I bought a Squier Cabronita w/Bigsby the other day and it lacks a tone knob and I really see no need for one.

It's an integral part of my tone. Why take away part of the sonic pallet? But to each his/her own.

I use it only when playing in certain styles. For rock or metal, I usually don't see the need, especially with distorted sounds. For 50's music, blues, jazz it definitely gets used.

I can't imagine playing a guitar without one. I prefer having two, but I get by with one.

+1

Some craftsmen prefer a plethora of tools to help shape the nuances of their work.

Yes I do use my tone knobs on both my guitar and Amp as it helps me get the right flavor for what I am trying to do

Now that's a good question.

If there's a tone control on the guitar, I use it all the time - mainly just on about 6<10 area.

But, I had an old archtop fitted with a pickup only - no controls at all. Interesting thing to play...

And I've been planning to test the "passing lane" mod on a Tele (the bypass switch; stock on HSS AmDlx Strat), if and when I feel I have the time.

And on top of it all, the Richie Kotzen Teles have no tone control...

but the real question is if a tone knob is made out of specific types of tone wood does it affect the tone more? just playing... i use the tone nob a little but not a great deal. some guitars seem to have much more shaping than others.

I always use the tone knob to obtain the sound I want.

I guess I'm intended to be excluded from responding, as I rarely play at home; almost all of my playing is either in band practice (either one of the rock bands I'm in, or my church band) or gig/performance/service.

That said, of course I use my tone knob.

For a year or so I had a single-pup Gibson Melody Maker with no tone knob, and I rarely played (gigged) it. I missed having that parameter. Sole time I gigged it with any of my bands was with my punk rock band where my tone and level of distortion stay uniform throughout the set:

Though, of course, to each his/her own.

I use it. I use it on one of my 2 amps on all three of my guitars. (sometimes)

I appear to be in the minority here...almost never touch my tone knob, the one exception is my Esquire to roll just a bit of edge off sometimes. I guess if my amp and guitar are talking to me, no need to be twirling knobs.

On guitars with separate tone knobs, I frequently dial back the bridge pup a bit.
But otherwise, no - pedals and amps have far superior tone controls for adjusting the entire signal.
