I like to play punk rock on guitar and I was wondering if either the Strat or the Tele is the "best one" for playing punk.

Teles are quite popular in Punk. You want raw drive, not lots of adjustments.

Joe Strummer and Chrissie Hynde are good examples.

And let's not forget the punk guitarists punk guitarist, Wilko Johnson, whose strumming technique is ... unique, if sometimes bloody.

Even though I play a Strat, I'm going to have to say a Tele, with a humbucker!

Not a lot of distortion, just loud enough to get some good ol' over the top overdrive...

Do you want punk with a trem or punk without a trem? :D

I think some of the aforementioned tele punk artists played teles literally because that is what they found beat-up in a pawn shop or garage sale and they bought it for next to nothing, slapped a humbucker on it, and proceeded to make rock history!

doesn't matter, but a strat will at least give you more options. I use a Mustang and a Guild S-70.

That is today's punk? I'm over 50 and never liked punk.

Sound more like something Buddy Holly would play. With very little tweaking would be country music.

Actually, other than the lyrics, I see absolutely no difference between this and Rockabilly. But, I guess a rose by any other name...

I have a old Navy friend who lives out in Wisconsin, that plays in a Ramones tribute band which is doing very well. they're called " Sedated " and he uses both , Epiphone and Gibson Les Pauls for his sound. He plays them straight through a Marshall stack with no effects. Just raw power.

No, that's old punk. Thus the 26/10/1992 in the title of the 'tube.

And yes, lots of punk music is based on rockabilly. Some are even covers of rockabilly songs. "Punk" is the attitude and style of playing more than anything else.

I'd say play whatever feels best for you, even if it's a cigar box guitar through a Shin Ei Companion fuzz pedal, or whatever. There should be any rules, just DIY and say "f*** it." If you got the songs and something to say, then that's all that matters.

+1000, no rules no barriers and all attitude.
So pick up a ukulele, slap in a humbucker, plug into a Marshall and you're good to go.......or not. :D :D

As others have said. Punk is about your attitude. If you are chasing classic punk tones there are examples of both guitars to be found. Plus, Strats and Teles come with all sorts of different pick up configurations that really makes the argument kind of moot. Go to a music store. Pick up a few examples of each. Plug them in and find something you like both the sound and playability of. Then you know.
