The first record I bought with my own money was the 45 rpm single of Wilson Pickett's In The Midnight Hour, in 1965.

Well, I had my older sister give me a bunch of records when I was 13 (random stuff like Johnny Winter, Blues Brothers Soundtrack, Monty Python, and Nation Lampoon's White Album,) but the first actual album (actually it was a cassette :P ) that I bought with my own money was Dire Straight's "Brothers In Arms." It might seem corny now, but I was hooked by that guitar riff for "Money For Nothing." I wasn't even musically inclined then (not for another three years,) but there was something about the sound of that guitar that got my attention. At the time I was listening to Top 40 radio, which was what ever was popular in the 80's and I didn't even really hear Led Zeppelin yet. When I finally heard the opening riff to "Heart Breaker," then it was all over but the crying. The music bug bit hard. Oddly enough, I went with the bass though. :P

The first several were Jimmy Reed 45s.

I think the first was "Bright Lights, Big City"...then "Big Boss Man".

I liked the flip side, Part 2 best, which started a lifelong affection for B sides.

My first 45 I bought was at a penny record sale in a local store, so I bought Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas version of "Do You Want to Know a Secret?" and on my way home I found on the ground still in the store packaging The Last Time / Play With Fire by the Rolling Stones and it was just released (1965) and I was the happiest kid ever, I think I liked the B side better which at that time was Play with Fire

Arjay,
I remember Pt109, but I really liked Big Bad John by Jimmy Dean.

The first 'album' I ever bought was a cassette. I have to give my parents credit for letting me get an album with a song called "Big Balls" on it.

Yes - Fragile
I was 12 at the time it was released.
Bought it because I liked the cover.
Ended up being a big musical influence on me.

In the early 60's, I listened to AM Rock Radio, until The Beatles. Then if I remember correctly, my first record I bought was "Meet The Beatles".

The first record I ever owned was The Archies -SugarSugar but my mum bought that for me when I was about 8 or so. The first 45 I ever bought with my own money was Elvis - In The Ghetto.... I think. It might have been Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline. I bought a couple dozen singles like that and then stopped buying records for a few years until I discovered Rock. Then my Pop collection gathered dust and I started buying LPs. First album was Uriah Heep - Magician's Birthday.

First 45 was 1962: "Green Onions"- Booker T. & the M.G.'s

First LP was 1962: "Two Steps From The Blues" - Bobby Bland

First Cassette was 1973: "The Dark Side Of The Moon" - Pink Floyd

First CD was 1984: "Born in the USA" - Bruce Springstein and the E Street Band

I still have each one... + about 6,000 others !

Since starting my first job at 13, I have kept a list of 10 Albums I wanted. Every payday, religiously, I would buy the top two titles on the list and add two more to the bottom.

I still do this today...

cheers!

I think it was " Honky Tonk Women " which was a 45 that I had gotten way back around 1970 at the old , Heroux's Music right here in Woonsocket. Not only did he sell records and 8 tracks, but he was the only Fender dealer in town as well.
