Finally caught up on the great tunes here gang. You’ve all been busy while I’ve been slack.

I liked your funky original Vibin’, Mike. A lot of good out of the box happening there. Nice creation. The Blues was good as ever, and the Irish in me appreciated St. Paddy’s flavour of the day. Thanks for those.

Your “When My World Falls Apart” made me sad, Mark. It made me wanna jump in a pickup and put the pedal to the metal on a highway to nowhere. Powerful lyrics there.
Yellow snakes. You have something going on that is full of creative juices. Nice. Coming from a land where the whales play, and presently at home far from whale watching, one of my favourite pastimes, now with a large coffee table book with poetry and art about whales for all to enjoy, I have to say that was a terrific piece you did. Whales are a large motivation for musicians like Paul Horn on the westcoast, and your composition fits right in. Loved the photograph.

I’d like to add you here too Blue Notes; unfortunately, we are blocked with your music entry on this side of the border.

And Marky, I have a feeling you’re going to be giving us something soon now that you are up and running. Looking forward to it. :D
All in all thanks for the tunes everyone.

And should I be late for the next round. TIA.

FSB

Mike, I fully get the copyright stuff. It’s all a PITA amongst the legal loopholes and fine print. I’ve dealt with it for years.
It keeps getting worse and harder to decifer on both sides of the fence. In this side of the border it’s very much a trade issue involving our two countries intermingled with the WTA and our government’s favoritism. It’s as hard on those who want to perform as it is for those who want to control. Many high ranking pros have protested the current restrictions and the battle goes on with no clear information in sight.

I like what Frank Sinatra was reported to have advised Nancy Sinatra. “Just make sure you own the Masters!” Pretty sound advice.

My dilemma is knowing whether my or a partner’s backing track is free and clear to distribute. And if not to who, where, and how much is this clarified and directed.

Case in point. Which drum tracks provided by either the company or partner get a clearance pass. Which ones don’t? If you co-produce how would you know for sure. Believe me when I say it matters. I once got a letter from a publisher claiming foul because a client (a major insurance corporation) didn’t clear what they provided me for production and they believed they did. All of this crossed borders! That was before it was as tough as today. The music was Chariots of The Gods still on the charts, and the insurance company didn’t care what it cost. They were going to have it, and after I dealt with it, they got it. It might as well have been a drum track or a piano riff. Just sayin’. Because I dealt directly and had a boardroom of lawyers (including the owner) my chances were pretty good nose to nose. It’s the Cherry Pickers out there to watch. Even original material is looked at by those sharks.

Speaking of crossing borders, a copyright is only good within your border unless you or the other party registers in each and every country accordingly. It also means you could ,but unlikely, run a risk according to foreign copyright claims. Keep that in mind when using a service. I told you it was complicated. Whoo boy!

Sorry to put the damper on things about this. But, this copyright business is just that . . . a business. I’ve dealt at the collections level and payment level and they are rigid in their belief with a big stick knowing that you have a little stick. Too bad. It hurts creativity equally as much as it protects it. Right now the collection for artists is as before only more so not knowing how much is coming or going before it reaches the creators. But that’s another story.

So if you know of any free and/or reasonable cost clear backing tracks or loops without fine print that can be used commercially . . . I’d be interested in knowing. Some info on the net or websites is lacking. Thanks!

FSB

Note: Fair use of copyright doesn’t exist per se in Canada as it does in the U. S. If the WTA gets it’s way that denial could become universal. Other jurisdictions also apply. A kid can’t sing Happy Birthday on a street corner legally without payment today. Phooey! :P

Those are good things to think about concerning Copyrights, etc., FSB.

I've recorded some guitar solos and now I'm experimenting with virtual instruments, loops, effects and backing tracks. Now you have me thinking about Copyrighted backing tracks.

There are plenty of "royalty free" backing tracks available.

RE: Copyrights... I thought that Song Titles, drum tracks and chord progressions could not be copyrighted. Am I wrong?

Much appreciated, Mark!

Awhile back I recorded this lullabye for my son and daughter-in-law. A friend asked me if
he could write lyrics and sing to it. I said sure knowing that it was not an easy task, but I think
that he did a great job, it's called (The Story of My Life and features Gabe Stenziano from NY) :
