I think this is one of your better ones, Mark. That must be one sad road trip because this one is headed in the right direction. Mighty fine ambient geetar tone in the distance, and the photo(s) are great.

We don't have much of that old gas station look up here like in the States. Imagine the stories they could tell. Your stories are a great replacement and addition.

FSB

If I am correct, a second look at the gas station makes me think it's a painting. The girl inside the doorway is cool. As for the motel, it should have a sign that says recording studio because the acoustics are interesting. IMHO.

Thanks FSB! Glad you liked it! My mom got too old to live by herself and my sister and I flew in to help her sell her house before she moved to live with my sister in Hawaii and I drove her old car back to AZ... so it was kind of an emotional drive! The gas station is in Bowie, AZ and taken with my old broken cell phone -- I kind of like the messed up effect the broken lens gave these photos! Just me sitting at the end of a bed finger strumming my Recording King Dirty 30's parlor guitar!

:)
Now that’s art. 8)Broken lense? Cool! Reminds me of the days when I began as, ahem, a B & W cameraman with a complement rack of lenses as zooms became vogue. In those days video switchers were mechanical and there was more than point and shoot photography in the studio. Effects were most often supplied by whatever the camera crew could devise or adopt. So as for your great shots, thumbs up from me. :D
FSB

I know what it’s like to have family at a distance, so I can understand where you’re at. Fortunately, technology can be a help at times as long as there’s help. Failing that there is the phone. Hawaii is a long ways away, however. Right now my mom is about to turn 95 and we are debating about her coming here for Christmas as she is up and about most days. We made three trips there last year and it is not cheap nor convenient through ski and tourist territory, especially at Christmas. Her age is a travel concern so we’ll see. That’s what happens as age takes over. Life is full of excitements and, thankfully, it adds to the music - or is it the other way around. :P

I feel there's a song there somewhere.

Cheers!

I studied photography back in the day... and still prefer a fast prime over any zoom!

Songs everywhere you look! :)

I agree about the complement lenses. I can see your photographic background, Mark. Good stuff. All too often, sadly, the album cover or graphic art for digital music is compromised.

There is a difference for the uninitiated. Most people take pictures, and that’s okay. Taking photographs is a whole different genre. IMHO.

Three quick stories:

1) I was told, by a well known producer some years back, that there was a historical event in Washington with a ballet company. They flew in a hockey crew from New York to televise it. Local Washington media were upset because, as it was said, they were used to covering big events. The director said he didn’t doubt that, but for such a historical live event he felt it was best to have a crew that could be accurate to ensure any fast or unrehearsed movement, and the hockey crew managed to fill that spot.

2) I met one of two National Geographic’s best photographers. I asked him how they managed those remote candid shots so well. He said that when his budget is stretched to such an expense, and the event is a one time thing, there’s no second chance to come back to get that shot. It comes down to motor drive, and taking literally hundreds of photos to get that one good one if necessary (sort of like the photography pool with it’s celebs or the government).

3) I was shooting CFL video for CTV at ground level one day. A young child came over, and with downtime, I would let the odd child look at through the camera which had a field zoom so long and heavy that it had two struts mounted to hold it.

This time it was a little boy who had a small film camera around his neck and when I complimented him on it and asked if he was going to be a photographer some day he asked me, “What kind of camera do you have?” I told him just one, and tapped the TV camera where I told him it cost over $100, 000 as it was set up. :D
FSB

Now days, software editing has changed things and saved or made a lot of shots. There’s still pictures and photographs though.

Wow! Great stories and experiences! Thanks for sharing!

I've mostly been an underpaid artist/writer some big projects (like for Barneys NY), but mostly small scale gallery shows and DIY projects. You can see my last larger photo project here:

https://markhahnphotography.wordpress.c ... lable-now/

Not trying to drive up book sales, just sharing my work -- the entire written essay is posted here and a good sample of photos! (IE. I don't intend on riling up any self appointed forum police! The link above is a standalone page and free. And many people have really liked looking at this page... )

Regarding photo equipment, all the photos here were taken with my ancient Olympus E-P1 micro 4/3rds camera and a fast 25mm prime (50mm eq.)... processed in Lightroom.

Best!

Mark:

I recall your great book and your writing and photos made a nice combo my friend. Your latest song is another example that tells me you hold a virtual library inside that head of yours. Thanks, for sharing.

As for the Oly, they made some pretty nice cameras. It’s crazy how many people buy a camera only to upgrade it because it’s the latest greatest promotion, and still they never use the previous one to it’s ability or they never get to be an improved photographer with the new toy.

I remember as a kid growing up in a tourist town when Japanese cameras became vogue and tour buses had fancy cameras hanging around the neck of every tourist from the far east. It was fun watching them compete taking pictures of everything from totem poles to blades of grass.

Now cellphones are here, there there, there everywhere. Even the pros use them. But, full frame cameras (the best ever IMHO) are starting to be introduced to a more plentiful fan base. Unfortunately, the good and bad convenience and marketing factors come to play.

Thanks FSB!!!

Gotta rely on that library in my head because I'm not that great a guitarist!

:)

Most my friends have gone full frame, but I'm kind of happy with my micro 4/3rds camera. I guess I grew up with film and even my 12mp E-P1 seems to be roughly equivalent to 35mm other than the increased apparent depth of field. With film, I owned medium and large format cameras, but I decided the compromises in convenience with 35mm were worth it for me. I don't make large enough prints to require more. anyway, I still love photography and gear... maybe sometime I'll make the jump... just for now, I really like the fast primes I've collected for my current system. even though dated, the E-P1 is still a handsome and delightful camera to shoot! :)

Good stuff, Mark - let's keep this going....

Just noodling solo guitar (no other instruments) for tone test with new EQ plugin:

Sounds good, Mike. Not harsh or muddy. Nice even tone across the 6 strings IMHO. Whatcha using for strings, and how about that EQ?

Cheers!

Not only does it sound good, but it looks good too IMHO. Thanks, for the details, Mike.
