My pleasure, FSB - just want others to know - many think it involves a lot of $$$ but it doesn't.

Like Mike pointed out there are a lot of free options to record and/or learn your music and you need not break the bank. You can get freebies or useful inexpensive software like Fender's Guitar Chord Riffstation, lots of cool plugins, and more. You just have to search them out. You can get a lot for a little, or the sky's the limit.

James Taylor and many others you would be surprised to know, including music legends like Hendrix and SRV, and greats like Neil Young and Keith Urban can't read music per se. Knowing what a C chord or pentatonic scale is does not mean that you can or can't read music. If you can - super duper califragilistic. It's a great tool not only for playing, but for producing and mixing too. You can always make a meal from following a tried and true recipe, but you can cook up something outstanding without a recipe too. Aside from all this you can still get an understanding, pass on that vibe, and be a star.

When I first started recording at home I used Audacity and no interface. I just plugged
the guitar into an overdrive pedal and ran that into the 1/8" mic input. It worked.

Tracktion looks interesting, but I'm already up to speed with Reaper... also, for recording multiple tracks, I really prefer using my Tascam digital 8-track... seems a lot less intrusive than having to interface with a computer (though I do use one for mixing and mastering after the tracks are recorded).

I thought Audacity was fine for recording, but the lack of realtime adjustments was kind of a deal breaker for me when it came to a DAW.

A new acoustic song! Somehow seeing Lucky today put me in a weird emotional state… and this song that I recorded in an anonymous motel room, somewhere between Detroit and Tucson on my recent road trip seemed to make sense. Just a raw recording, me sitting at the edge of a strange bed with my $99 crap travel parlor guitar and a portable recorder… trucks roaring by and TVs playing in adjoining rooms… sometimes you just have to keep going!

Great work, Mark. I love the concept of singing in the motel as long as the banging stays on the other side of the wall. If it’s the correct tempo even better.
So many songs have been written in hotel/motel rooms. Somewhere in my collection of lost tunes I have or had an album cut in a hotel room. I couldn’t tell you who did it as it was obscure. I like things like that. Weird huh?

Keep the creativity comin’, Mark.

Songwriters have a kinship. Perhaps, you’ll enjoy this about a famous hotel host to many artists, songwriters included.

Mark, do you like The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band? A couple weeks ago, I was listening to various psychedelic and/or garage bands from the 60's, and came across this band. I'm asking because you're musical style reminds me of some of their songs that I heard.

Sounding good, Mark! :D

I went acoustic direct (instead of mic'd) on this new one of mine:
