Thanks, for your informative post and song, Dave. I enjoyed listening on some full range cans that I use for mixing. Sounded good. I too use N3s and the 2i2 interface which IMO has great preamps.

I might consider taking the well played guitars down just a smidge behind your vocal after your intro. This will place emphasis on your intro and leave your vocal up front without boosting it. I don't believe that reverb on vocals always helps, but it doesn't always hurt either when used in a minor fashion. (Think of it this way. Studios cherish a hoard of good and often rare reverbs that are simulated for our pleasure today). Sometimes it helps to fatten the vocal and at times smooth it out. Too much is great for effect, but subtlety is handy when needed. Another possibility is to leave the vocal as is, and take the guitars to a distant point with effects (again reverb carefully added is one way). Clean intro with the distancing faded in with the vocal may give the impression that some or all of the guitar positioning has changed which gives a motive for the effect. Either way, these options may thicken the sound and help to warm it up (EQ aside) should that be a preference. Have fun with variables on this approach.

It sounds pretty good as is, like an intimate room or small stage sound, so I hope you don't mind my options presented. Hey, it's a personal taste. Others may have a different suggestion or two. But, it's all good, and it started with you. :D
Nice work, Dave.

Hi FSB,

Thank you so much for the thoughtful comments and suggestions. You've given me several new ideas to try and food for thought, and that's exactly what I was hoping for! Mixing (and performing...) the vocals was definitely where I struggled the most, so your notes are most helpful.

Thanks again for taking the time -- I'm sure others will benefit from your comments as well.

Cheers,
Dave.

The antidote to bad politics is love and music! On the first debate night, I chose to record this song which has nothing to do with politics!

Best!

Thanks! Yeah, I needed to do something to get that nasty taste out of my mouth! :)

The acoustic is just a basic Ibanez, nothing special... mic'd, the lead tone comes from lineout from Fender Mustang III v2, '65 Twin, Black Box fuzz with some reverb. Electric guitar is Charvel Desolation DC-1 with EMG pickups... bought it closeout for $299 new and shipped and love the guitar (Fender owned company).

Thanks MM!!! Nice track you posted too! petzval, nice song! I'd like the vocals to be raised a bit above the guitars. Not that you really sound like him... but I just saw Glen Hansard live last night and it made me think of it, was a great show! Check him out (or the Frames) if you haven't heard him/them.

Thanks Rollie! I've been trying to wrap my head around this new software :

http://www.magix.com/us/samplitude/?gcl ... 16194619:s

This version has built in 'Melodyne' which does auto pitch correction or manual pitch manipulation 'on-the-fly'
and it also has 3 different mixer 'overlords' to handle auto mixing of classical, pop or rock formats with auto 'special positioning' for drums, horns, piano keys, bells & whistles, you name it, it finds a 'place' for it in the balance setting.
