Mix of my beat to crap vintage Stella Harmony with an over-driven lead over it (effects thanks to Mustang III v2):

Good stuff, Mark. Kinda Greenwich Village. 8) The thrift store guitar sounded great with a vibe all its own.

Wow! FSB! I'll take that as a huge compliment! I'm just developing what is turning into "my sound," but if I'm harkening something like classic Greenwich Village, it's cool with me! :)

Mark, I don't know if I should admit this or not, but you reminded me of a time (long ago) when I belonged to a Folk (singing) Society, and 500 miles was a standard for me that I had long forgotten about (at my age I'm lucky to remember anything). I was two steps away from moving to a hippy commune on some smaller island. Fortunately, money over freedom won out.Phew! That was a close call.

Sounds a lot more interesting than a lot of people's pasts! (And I've always loved 500 Miles!) :)

It’s been an ugly year politically, so I guess I needed to expose my peace-love inner-hippy self here in this song. It’s an attempt to tip the balance back toward the positive. Come on guys! We can do better than we’ve been doing, even if we don’t all have the same opinion on how to make bad choices. In the end, we are all outsiders! I recorded this song several ways, but decided that the simplest all acoustic version suited it best.

Very cool, Mark. Seems not many besides us are recording these days, or at least
sharing what we record.

I don't record many cover tunes, but I got a friend to play acoustic (tuned B-D-D-D-D-D) and
sing the vocals on this Goo Goo Dolls cover of 'Iris' :

Good stuff, guys. 8) I always thought it would be an interesting idea to write some music, but only using whatever instruments that you find in a thrift store, even some Fisher Price toy keyboard. Obviously, it would cost some money to do it and not top of the line gear, but some sort of experimental thing. There's a junk/consignment store down the road from my house that I went into one time and had a couple of guitars in there and some little Yamaha amp that gave me that idea. There was some Teisco hollowbody in there they wanted $200 for that I wanted to get so bad, but couldn't because I didn't have the money. Well, technically I did, but that would have probably be needed for other things like groceries. That reminds me of a story of a friend of mine I had when I lived in Florida saw these drums in a shop that were $300, that looked like the ones John Bonham had. That transparent amber Ludwig kit he played in the 70's. Anyhow, he had the cash on him to buy them right then and there, but that money was for his rent. Well, he couldn't live in the drums, so there you go. :P I know that sucks, though. Because you know you'll never get that deal again, most likely. I'm pretty sure that Teisco is long gone, too. That SOB would have howled cranked through my Super Champ with some nasty fuzz. It was the ultimate, beater pawn shop special from the depths of the 60's garage.

I would never have guessed that I was going to write a song about Marilyn Monroe, but here you go! Somehow, reading about her last interview struck a chord in me and this song came from the emotions.

That is an interesting concept, Paul. Some years back I went to a week long seminar put together by Ludwig. In one classroom session Ludwig introduced a school group of teens that were currently involved in taking part of an ongoing experimental music training program.

After the early morning introduction, the kids were sent out to roam the city as a group to gather all sorts of junk. Later they used brake drums, cowbells immersed in buckets of water, pipes, and a slew of other strange and common newly found items. During the playback of well known TV shows and movies (like Hitchcock), those kids made the silent films come to life with amazement by all. It was very professional and not at all what we expected.

I can imagine the possibilities you suggested. The Grammys are waiting.

Greetings All,

I thought I’d share a song that I recently recorded using some Fender and other gear. It’s a cover song for which I have obtained a mechanical license to distribute, though my only interest is in learning and improving. I’d be interested in constructive comments with regard to the sound, recording quality, and mix if anyone feels inclined. If not, I hope you enjoy the tune and encourage you to check out Lucero’s original version. Good vibes to all!

https://soundcloud.com/petzval/drink-til-were-gone

Equipment and Recording details:
Guitar 1: 2015 Fender ADE Stratocaster HSS using the neck pickup (N3 noiseless)
Guitar 2: 2013 Fender MIM Cabronita Telecatser Thinline using both neck and bridge pickups (Fideli’Tron)
Guitar 3: Martin DX1AE acoustic
Bass: 2012 Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass using the neck (Precision) pickup through a Fender Rumble 200 V3
Drum: VERY simple beat using one of the kits in my DAW software
Vocal: Mic’ed with an Audio-Technica AT2020 condenser microphone and a small amount of reverb in my DAW software

Guitars 1 and 2 were run though a MOD 102+ amp that I assembled from a kit (modkitsdiy.com). I mic’ed the amp cabinet (a now-defunct early 90s Crate TD-70 open-back combo amp with a 12” speaker) with the AT2020. Both signals are relatively clean with no effects. I also mic’ed the bass amp and acoustic guitar with the AT2020.

I used a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface and the Ableton Live 8 Lite DAW (which came with the Focusrite) to record and mix the song.

Cheers,
Dave.
