Actually a really good question. I've actually sold two in the past week; one was a partscaster I made and another was my Les Paul. The partscaster I felt would help out a newbie so he wouldn't break the bank and he'd still have something of greater quality at that price. The Les Paul I just never bonded with. Most of my guitars are different though. I have a dreadnought, a cutaway, and a classical acoustic. All three producing different sounds. Same goes with my electrics. Doublecut Hamer, Semihollow Ibanez, Peavey with a Floyd Rose, and 3 strats. OK, so here's the deal with strats. They are so easily modded to have different voices. Pickups alone can make two guitars that look the same sound completely different. I'll buy many more Stratocasters through the years. No doubt. Each will have its own voice.

I have a friend with 6 Honda Gold Wings. She can only ride one at a time, but who am I to tell her that she only needs one?

I truly wish I could find one that satisfied all of my guitar needs. Just don't see it happening.

Every time I go to the store, I see so many beautiful guitars just waiting for a home. It breaks my heart to have to leave them there. :(

No two of mine are identical. For instance I have an AmDeluxe Ash SS Tele and I also have an AmStd SS. Very close, but not identical in sound or feel. I also have an HS and an SH tele along with 69 and 72 RI Teles. My first was a Hwy1, which I still have and that has a sort of bluesy, muted sound I don't get out of the other Teles.

Now could I get all these sounds by manipulating amp settings? Probably, maybe even possibly. But I for one am not keen for watching a band where half the set is the guitarist dialing in the sound for the next song. And I'm not big on massive FX boxes either (more because I'm 62 than anything else). So I use a set-once-and-leave tube amp and pick up the guitar I want for the sound I want. That reduces 3 - 5 minutes of banter while the band resets to 30 seconds to swap guitars.

To finish dealing with the original question. No, I don't bring all my guitars to a gig. But then, I've never been in a situation where in one night the band will go from smooth Jazz to classic rock to old school country to pop rock to pop Jazz to modern country to you name it. The band usually has a style and genre or two, so I bring the three guitars I have that I think best match that type of sound and my playing style.

Yeah it's also vanity. I have 'em because I can afford them and yes, perhaps I should donate even more than I already do to charity instead of more guitars. But as I look at it, today having a job goes a long way and there are several guitar makers here in SoCal that employ quite a few people. So my buying US made guitars IS a contribution to humanity too.

This thread helped me break the 'Cycle of Addiction' this week !

I had been negotiating to buy a pristine, first year, low serial number, Music Man Albert Lee for half a Grand under Market Value.

Image

I've wanted one of these ever since seeing and meeting Albert Lee two years ago as reported in my Albert Lee Recap .

I thought I would flip it and make a few Bennys on the deal. But, I realized that once I got it, I wouldn't want to part with it.

With other things I want to do, having another guitar right now (total of 10) just didn't make any sense, so I withdrew my offer just as the seller accepted it.

Sometimes, you just gotta say 'NO'.

cheers!

My wife spotted this T-shirt at a second-hand shop yesterday.

Naturally, I had to have it.
