This, and others like it, might be a reason to have one more axe.

I'm with yoda, alternate tuning is a reason I use for having another guitar that I won't play lol. Saturday I heard a tune off in the distance and picked up my guitar to strum it out. Stratocaster. 8)
Just like most times, I choose the best sounding to my ears. I love my other guitars that's why I have them. When looking for a guitar sound I've found that my Strat works better, more fun, easier than other guitars IMHO YMMV (to quote my favorite Martian :D )

I think you guys are reading far too much into this.
If we can keep the needs to guitars only, if you feel the need to go and buy every guitar in Guitar Center, go ahead.
All I am saying is no one needs 10 guitars. If you want 10 (or more, or less), that's cool. you don't need 10 of them.
You don't need to bring 10 guitars to a gig to "nail" all those tones. If you want to, that's cool.
I have 10 guitars. I don't need them all. I want to have 10 guitars.
May the 4th be with you.

Ahhh...but did we not just establish that we don't "need" guitars to begin with? Again, air, food, water, shelter...THAT is what a person needs. To play guitar in the first place is a "want".

And if it's not a matter of "need", who are you to say how many guitars any one individual should "want", let alone for what purpose? Who are you to say that any specific number is enough or too many? And who was it that gave you this authority...seriously...was it my wife? She told me 20 was a fair number.....after all, my wife is a musician herself 8) .

If we're going to accept that having a guitar or multiple guitars is some kind of need, then perhaps we should also acknowledge that everyone has different needs...yes?

If you're going to keep insisting that "no one needs 10 guitars" then it seems like these are issues that need to be addressed. Otherwise, perhaps it would be more appropriate for you to suggest that you don't have any use for more than 10 guitars and just accept that everyone has different "needs" and "desires".

Again, needs and desires are two different things.
The only reason we guitar players have multiple guitars beyond the 3 main pick up types and acoustics is because we WANT them. I want them, you want them, we all want them.
You cannot play more than one at a time (well, most people, I'm sure someone can).
All you need to play the guitar is one guitar. Everything else is icing on the cake.
I agree to disagree.

Other than a Squier Affinity that I don't really count, my first electric was a Squier Stagemaster. Still have it and when it comes down to it, I COULD get by with just it - don't really need the other 5. I don't really need a 12 string Strat and don't play it much, but it just sounds sooo good for some stuff that I can't see myself getting rid of it. I prefer playing blues with my MIM with Texas Specials, but don't really have to - it just sounds better. Just like if I want to hear SRV play Pride And Joy on U Tube I skip over the videos with his red Strat and click on one that he is playing his #1. Doesn't mean that the red Strat is no good, is just that his #1 sounds better for the song. I'm sure that there must be a song he did that sounds better with the red Strat or he wouldn't have kept it. Or he would have changed the pickups to the same as his #1 so that he would have had a backup with same sound.

I don't do alternate tunings, but if I did and had a wife, would I use it as justification to buy more guitars? You bet! But when it comes down to it, when you have to turn the amp off, walk over to a stand, unplug one guitar, put another one on, plug it in, and turn the amp back on, how many seconds between songs are you really saving over retuning the guitar you were already playing? Or as another wrote, get a VG or an auto-tune guitar instead of multiple guitars. Or if the new Strats with personality cards cover alternate tunings just sell off the whole herd, buy one and use the rest of the money to take the family on a vacation.

We can always find a good reason to buy another guitar or amp that we want but don't really "need". Women can always find a good reason to justify buying a new pair of shoes even though they have an almost identical pair. Sometimes it is denial and sometimes is just a matter of getting it because you want it. Or because you come across such a good deal that you can't afford to pass it up. The good old, "I'll buy it, play it a few months, then sell it for a few hundred profit". Then can't part with it so it joins the herd.

With luck I'll have a another Strat in my "corral" by the end of the month.

Yep...certainly are. You don't "need" a guitar to begin with.

Quote:

Again who are you to determine, dictate or even suggest what I or anyone other than yourself should need?

Just like the news, you take portions of quotes to support your arguement.
You obviously don't understand what I mean.
Thanks for my first internet disagreement. Its been fun!
(I'm absolutely serious. I never get into anything like this on the net!)

My single days are over and I have a beautiful wife, so I can't complain. As a drummer, who rightfully or wrongfully sits in the background, I gotta tell ya, you need the guitar to get the girl! :D - And that's both physical and mental  More couldn't hurt.

I do not see how it's up to anyone OTHER than the person who owns the guitars to decide how many guitars any given individual "needs", let alone what would constitute a "legitimate use". Every last one of us has different "needs".

But that's just -my- opinion.

This is why I cut way back on my online participation. Some threads are interesting and fun. Others, not so much. There used to be build threads by Ceri and others that would keep me intriqued for hours. Now there's this. Who has the time?

I hesitated quite a while before hitting "submit". I don't usually like to pile on to train wrecks, but I thought it would be good to point out how tedious and boring even a simple thread can become when someone "has" to have the right answer to a question with no answer.
