Like some of the people said already, there are worse things to spend your $$ on.

People collect all kinds of things, matchbooks, stamps, coins, hats, whatever. I have my KISS collection that most of you would find silly but to each his own.

I have 2 Musicmaster basses, so when we are gigging I can swap out at a second's notice with no big change in the sound, meaning I don't have to reset gains. Never a good idea to not have a spare at a gig.

I have one SX short scale jazz bass. This was my original "back up" before I got the 2nd Musicmaster. Nice little bass but the output is very low so if I needed to play it at a gig it required sound mixing and resetting.

I have a Fender Montara acoustic, great to have an acoustic and it is acoustic electric so I can use it at open mics etc.

One Epiphone acoustic, this one stays at the cottage 4 hours away. It's a relatively inexpensive guitar with no electronics, just for the campfires without having to haul one in the car when we go up in the summer.

I also have a Squier strat, just because you want to go electric from time to time.

And lastly I have a Fender BG-29 acoustic bass. I am 1/3 of an acoustic group so I need an acoustic bass.

That's it, a small collection and each guitar has a purpose and role to fill. Now my Alesis drums? Yeah, those are unnecessary and just for fun. :D

I'm curious, and not trying to bust your chops at all, but how much of a KISS collection? Gene has a tendency to put the name on the most ridiculous items. I'm surprised they haven't come out with KISS celery yet. Oops, don't give him any ideas! :P Can't say I blame him, though. It's not like you're going to make much money selling albums these days.

I have three American Stratocasters, except for the color the only difference is that they are tuned differently. I hope this helps, whoever devised alternative to tuning should be boiled in oil.

You could always trade them all in for a VG Strat......

I've demo'd Gibson LP's with the mini tune system, several times. I know there's a stigma to owning one, but it seriously works very well. Push a button, you're in tune. For onstage use, it could be really nice.

I know a lot of people have howled about that tuning system for Gibson, but I think it's a great idea. It certainly makes things a little easier in a lot of situations. I think there was a company that also made those for Teles and such, too.

I know those tuning systems are kind of ugly, but I hate tuning a 6-string, but I hate stringing up them even worse. :P They need a robot to do that. Yeah, I'm a lazy sod. Guitar tech, I ain't. :P I do like the concept you can easily try out different tunings, as well.

Yeah, wouldn't really need one for bass, anyhow. I suppose if you're like Mark Egan, that could be handy where you can change tunings rapidly. I've never tried that, other than drop D and tuned down 1/2 step a long time ago.

I have 9 guitars and 1 bass. I get the reasoning why people have so many, but I honestly think that the whole different tool for a different job is kind of a cop out answer.
There are really only 3 guitars a player needs. Single coils, humbuckers and an acoustic. We can add a bass for those who like the low end thump.
Nobody in the audience, unless they are a gear head, will notice that you used a Strat instead of an SG for an AC/DC song. They don't care you played Jimi Hendrix tune on a Les Paul.
The only people we are pleasing is ourselves. We love guitars and we want guitars. That is the only reason people have so many.

Tronical, the same company that makes them for Gibson (who just rebrands them) make them for Teles and Strats too.
Guitar Center has them too (but fewer options).
