The short answer is - why not!

But seriously, if I had more than a dozen I would need a spreadsheet to keep track of when the strings were last changed and what brand/gauge I favored on each guitar.

you know, I have to sort of admit now that I think about it.

I've never quite understood when one would want to have 5 or 6 les paul, strats or tele's all of the same model type.

All of the ones I have that are of the same make/model are really nothing like each other.

but that said,, hey,, there are no rules except.. "the one that dies with the most guitars wins"..

well I have to agree with you,, with the # of guitars that I have, that is true.. but there is a much easier solution!

I keep a piece of lined note pad paper in each cases accessory compartment, listed on it is a maintenance log with the date of the string change, and what other maintenance was done, and if I changed gauge or string brand.

when I think I'm due, I just check the maintenance log that is located in each case.

ha! I'm not too ocd am I? LOL!

Why? Because I couldn't afford them in High School.

Variety is still the main reason though. If I get something similar to an existing model I'm more inclined to sell the old one, so it's more of an upgrade. A Squier Bullet Strat became a Fender Standard Strat, and a Squier Bronco Short-scale Bass became a Squier VM Jaguar Short-scale Bass.

Right now, I trying to decide between 3-Colour Sunburst or Surf Green in a Squier VM Jaguar guitar, for when my tax return arrives.
Then ... well, I have a local dealer (nice guy, operates out of his garage) who would really like to sell me some kind of Danelectro baritone guitar one day.

Ooh... I don't have anything with P90s either.
The list never ends.

Hell, I forgot to mention my amps. I have a 1988 Fender Studio 85 which has a Eminence Texas Heat that I installed in it, and a 1996 Fender Roc-Pro 700 which is a SS/Tube hybrid and is all stock. I don't have any intention of letting these two go, especially since I just had the Roc-Pro repaired a few weeks ago. It now sounds as if it just came out of the box. Would I add another amp to my collection ? Depends what comes around on Craig's List or my local GC that I can get for a reasonable bargain. I wouldn't mind having a cool amp collection.

Because we can?

I'ma go with that.

Brian; yours all look pretty different and I'm sure they play and sound different. I see guys on the Les Paul forums with 12 or more LP's that all look the same. That's the reason Gibson can charge $7k for a guitar that's virtually the same as their $2k models. Blind lust it is.

Yeah, I try not to get too redundant with different pieces. For example, I have 3 Teles, but each has a different pickup configuration (one is S/S with '50's wiring, one has standard 3-way switching but a mini-humbucker in the neck, and the third has a full-size neckbucker and 5-way switching, where the humbucker can be split to singlecoils). Similarly, I have 3 Specials: 2 Gibson LP Specials and a Hamer Special. The Hamer is different because it is a doublecut and has Seymour Duncan P-90s. The two Gibsons are both singlecuts, but sound different because the black one has proper P-90s, while the Spearmint Green has stacked P-100 humbuckers.

I like having a bunch and try to "rotate through" as a matter of course. It's fun! Fortunately, although my original music rock bands don't gig very often, I play most Sundays at church, plus a weekly church practice, so I have regular opportunities to play all the different ones (that are in playable condition, and most are).

Why so many guitars?

New Gear Day is always a fun day. That said, I am down to 4 guitars, an Ovation acoustic, one homemade from Fender style parts, one Agile Strat Clone with Fender Noisless pups, and one Ibanez RG 321, all cheap guitars.

In the last year I sold off my 80's Les Paul Custom, My 2003 Gibson Faded SG with the ebony fingerboard, and a custom built to my specs Philip Petillo guitar. I also sold off my Super Champ X2 (big mistake), and several old Gallien Kruegar Micro Lead amps. If I was playing out, I would have kept all of those and probably have had several more too.

I have appx 14, including 3 basses. Plus 5 amps- 3 guitar and 2 bass.

Several reasons for this:

two of my amps, my Rumble 15 and my Vox VT20+, are cheapies that really aren't worth the hassle of selling. The Fender was $99 new, the Vox $179... I tell myself they're there to take to lessons and such- if I ever find the time...

That leaves 3; a Mustang III; a SuperChamp X2; and a MarkBass MicroMark. I got a great Deal on the Mustang literally a week after I bought the X2. Both sound great, and both offer what the other doesn't.

For guitars, most are inexpensive models:

1)Affinity Strat- bought as a knockabout for $60, and not worth the effort to sell.
2)Squier VM Strat "Surfcaster" in surf green with Duncan designed lipstick pick ups. Loved the color and tone. Bought for playing slide on.
3)Fender Blacktop HH Strat. An interesting alternative to my main strat. I like it, but it doesn't see much play...
4) Squier Classic Vibe Tele. EXCELLENT guitar, and everyone needs a Tele, right?
5) Ibanez RG3EXFM1. My first guitar. Mainly sentimental value, but I do dig it out and play it now and then, because it's a good 'un.
6) Schecter Solo Special. An all mahogany copy of an LP Special. SG red w/black pick guard. p100 in the neck, 'bucker in the bridge. Coil tap on neck, split on bridge. Once I played it, I literally couldn't put it down! One of my favorites.
7) Epiphone Les Paul Traditional Plus Top Pro. in a gorgeous wine red. Great guitar, nice player and sounds darn great. The obnoxious LP heel design keeps me from playing it more...
8) Epiphone WildKat. semi hollow in blonde, with dual p90's and a Bigsby. A real keeper! This one sees lots of use!

plus a few higher end guitars:

Gibson Firebird. I will never get rid of this- and if something happens to it, I'll buy another in a heartbeat. My "baby".
Fender American Standard Stratocaster 3 color sunburst. My first expensive guitar, and another must have. I fall in love every time I play it.

Gibson '50s Tribute SG. in red, with p90's. LOVE this one. A surprise, because I'd never even considered an SG prior to being handed this one. Bought used, but in mint condition. STUPID amounts of sustain, and those pickups fit this guitar like a glove. A real tone machine.

All three of my basses are on the low to mid end:

Ibanez SRX. My first, and I still like it's tone the best. RED!
Schecter Stiletto Extreme. Got it used off CL. Great bass that I keep in drop D for playing more modern stuff. Black cherry w/quilted maple.
Schecter Omen Extreme. This one was more costly, likely due to the carved top. Gold/amber burst w/flame maple. A nice bass.

I still have a GAS list, but the urgency is gone. I'm VERY happy with the 4 or 5 players I already own. I would like a Jazzmaster, something with Filter/Fidelitrons, A Fender P=bass, and a Dobro. Likewise, a nice warm/bluesy tube amp- preferrably a Blues Deluxe, Supersonic 60 or esp a Delta Blues 1x15. A Tone King Falcon or Sky King if I win the lottery, lol. As a home player, the tube amp isn't necessary- they're really too loud, just a want.

1,3,4,7 and the Omen could likely be sold or traded off to the right person or for the right trade, but I'm not looking for it. The rest are not going ANYWHERE.

I used to have a whole bunch more gear than I have now. One day about 6 years ago I was looking at it all and decided to cull the herd and be more resistant to GAS. I had 9 amps, 2 acoustics, 16 electrics, a bass and about 120 or so pedals. I sold 3 amps, 11 guitars and about 80 or so pedals. I went down to what I thought was the essentials only. That began to creep up again albeit much more slowly than before so recently I sold a bunch more stuff again. 2 bass amps, some speakers, some low end tubes for amps I no longer had but were still hanging around and at least a dozen pedals.

I now have 5 electrics, 2 acoustics, 2 basses, 4 amps and maybe 30 or so pedals. Pedals are my weakness. They come and go. I like to try pretty much anything just to see if I find it useful. These days I concentrate on quality over quantity.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Lots of great answers to owning lots of guitars and amps. I am also happily guilty of acquiring 14 guitars and 8 amps in the last 50 years, and I am always on the lookout for other guitars and amps. It's a hobby to me. I rotate playing all my guitars and amps. I enjoy buying and selling. Those of us who continue to buy lots of gear are doing our part in keeping the music economy healthy.

I own 9 guitars which I would think a little obsessive, except that 3 of them were either free or given to me.

I'm with the OP in that I think the perfect combination is a Stratocaster (2), a Telecaster (3), a Hollow/Semi Hollow Body (1 - Heritage H-535, aka ES-335), Les Paul (0) and an Acoustic (3).

I find myself playing primarily only 4 of them - Am. Deluxe Stratocaster, Custom HH Telecaster, Heritage H-535 and Martin DC-1E. But all 9 of them get played at least monthly.

Being a new player, I think using a variety of different guitars w/ different necks is making me more versatile and adaptable.

I don't really have any explanation why I have 8 amps except to say that several were well-bought and are being viewed as potential investments.

But, it's all up to the individual. I'm not gonna diss a guy w/ 50 or with one, whatever makes you happy is my thinking !

cheers!

Don't get me started on amps. This is from about 3 years ago. Net, I think I have about 2 more now.

A loaded question like this is like asking some dame why she needs fifty pairs of shoes.

BECAUSE SHE CAN!

'Nuff said.

That's ... pretty sexist. It's 2015, not 1955.
