battered and deep fried?

Open and High nashville tunings account for 3 of my guitars, then there's Strat, Telebitser and my custom kit headless.

Guess which gets played the most..

Why have so many guitars?
Because I don't have to ask my wife's permission to buy stuff.
Nah, I just acquired some. For how long I've been playing, I only have a dozen. Nothing seriously expensive, so I guess It's not so bad. I only had three for the longest time.

Look at Yngwie Malmsteen. I think he only owns his vintage white Strats ... only uncountable replicas.
Does anybody know how much white strats he actually owns?

I've also noticed that some of my biggest critics ("You have HOW MANY guitars now? Do you play them all at the same time, hah hah?") in reality don't have much to say themselves. Yes, a good friend of mine only has ONE collectable -- but it's a $150,000 Corvette he can't even use 2/3 of the year. I doubt I've spend $150,000 on every guitar I've ever owned and that's not even his first 'vette. Another tells me "I only have one ... a Squire Tele and a 10W amp and that's all I need." Sure ... that's because you pick it up once a year to dust it and never play out. But how about the thousands of dollars of art you and your wife have collected over the years. Do you really NEED 14 original artworks in the spare dining room you've used twice since buying the house 24 years ago?

So I've learned how to get a truce with people who at least want to be reasonable. "Unless your life is spartan to the point that you have absolutely not one luxury, unnecessary, just because it was nice or looks good on the wall or whatever item, let's not get into the 'Do You Really Need' war. I don't need 22 guitars, but you don't need ___________ (fill in their vice items) either."

I have (3) Strats, American Standard, MIM, and FRS of 731
(2) Tele's American Standard and MIM
(2) Les Pauls a Custom Plus and a Special
(1) ES 335
(2) Accoustic
They all see play time but there are favorites, the American Tele and the
FSR Straight Six Strat get the most but i still enjoy the others.

Just acquired #14 -- A Stratocaster XII in sunburst. It's my first twelve.

I had a boss who thought I spent my money foolishly on guitars. I had about six at the time. He was an avid golfer. I asked him how many sets of clubs he had. Six. The subject never came up again.

That's a great answer, Steve. It's sort of like asking a drummer how many drums and cymbals he or she owns :D

Girlfriends?

More than you can pay attention to seems counter-productive. If I have a guitar (or girlfriend!) that goes seriously out of tune because I never pay attention, that's a sign to me that someone else might be better at showing and taking care. Time to let go.

Collecting is one thing, but hoarding is not good.

yeah... did you ever watch that documentary where he literally has like 40 strats that look the same clunking off each other as he digs out his favorite? it makes me squirm as i tend to care for my guitars a bit more than necessary. I honestly think he has 100 of the exact same guitar just free range against a wall in his living room.

Yes I watched this some time ago, too, and I was shocke how he treated his guitars.
My guitars are my babys and I even treat them as good as my dogs
Especially I was shocked when he pulled out the ´54 black strat, I would treat "her" like my queen of guitars, because I don´t think I will ever own an original `54. What a pity! :(

Compared to many rock heroes and rich collectors,my guitarsenal of 32 is rather modest.I have several reasons why I choose to have so many guitars.First I admire the construction techniques that vary from one guitar maker to another.Secondly I also like the may styles and shapes of guitars.Next I own several examples of one model of certain brands because even though they may look identical-except maybe for colour- each one may sound completely different from others of its same model due to differences in wood densities, hardware, and electronic components .When a musician has several guitars to play his/her dexterity improves due to adapting to the different neck sizes, string tension, action, scale length etc. so consequently when presented with a different guitar from their own, they aren't taken off guard by having to try and adapt to it .I have been a professional musician ever since I played my first paying gig 46 years ago and I rely on the wide range of tones that I can draw from by using different guitars for certain songs or genres of music.Like a visual artist depends on a wide range of colours and uses many different brushes in his work,it behooves a musician to have many guitars to draw from to colour his tonal palette.

At last count I have 1 cheap acoustic, an Epi LP, an Epi Sheraton (thanks Ezra Koenig), an Epi Casino Coupe (thanks Gary Clark Jr.) , a American Special Strat, a 56 VRI Strat, a '02 LP Standard, and 2 LP Studio (both with different pickups). Recently got a American Jaguar and a Classic Player Jazzmaster (thanks current indie bands). Why no Tele? Not really a Tele fan, plus I can probably make the Strat or Jag sound like a Tele with the right settings on the guitar and amp.

Wife is like, "What the hell?"

I like to tell myself at least all these babies do something a little different, which makes it hard to sell any off. Some get played more than others admittedly, but I at least like to give them all some play. When I try to record the silly songs I write, I use them all to get different sounds.

To be 100% honest, my favorite is probably the Sheraton. No more guitars for me, only more practice. I'm in GAS -Anonymous.

But as I look at it, today having a job goes a long way and there are several guitar makers here in SoCal that employ quite a few people. So my buying US made guitars IS a contribution to humanity too.

I said this to the guy in my local guitar shop when I bought my Jaguar. He actually seemed to be genuinely appreciative especially in the days of megastores like Guitar Center and online purchasing.
