The Oscars have been a joke for many years. LMFAO at how American Sniper could even win 1 award for best sound editing. WTF it's a war movie filled with shooting and bombs and it wins an award for sound?
They got 1 award right the whole night for best actor.

I haven't bothered watching that in years, probably decades. I don't know if I ever did bother, come to think about it. There seems to be an annoying element that comes with these award shows, or maybe I'm just a cranky, old bastard. :P

I work in the film biz so I'm probably supposed to support them but to me, it's Hollywood glamor gone bad amplified by gross commercialism. I mean, there ARE some good bits, but I'm not willing to sit through the rest of it for them.

My two cents (Canadian!)

I pay little attention to awards shows.
I know what I like, and I'm not concerned whether those movies, TV shows, albums, musicians, etc win awards or not.

On one hand--it's nice if they do--it's a bonus, but on the other, it's not a necessity.

As a former producer/director having been involved with award ceremonies of a similar, but smaller nature, I concur with Gridlok.

Smoozing, politics, relationships, promotion, and money is the name of the game.

Sometimes, they dangle the carrot with a popular choice to mask the crap.

I'm still mad Connery never won for Bond.
I don't understand how a red carpet fashion show trumps an actor's performance. Well, actually I do, because it's a show rather than a quality awards program. Nice to see the behind the scenes gang get recognized, but even that has become tainted.

The People's Choice Awards is the closest to reality . . . but, sometimes popularity over-rules technicalities.

In the end, it's both entertainment and fluff.IMO.

To quote George C. Scott who refused the Best Actor award for his role of Patton: ""The [Academy Awards] ceremonies are a two-hour meat parade, a public display with contrived suspense for economic reasons."

and later:

"I have nothing against Oscar. I know what he stands for and it's terrific. And I think when people used to hang around and pat each other on the back over a drink and dinner it was wonderful. But when it became an international hoopla, where careers lived and died on whether or not you did or didn't get an Oscar, then it got out of hand.". He said the whole thing was offensive, barbarous, and innately corrupt.

The only other award to ever be refused was Marlon Brando for his role in the Godfather, instead, he had a woman, purportedly a Native American, named SACHEEN LITTLEFEATHER make a 'refusal speech' on his behalf, berating America for it's treatment of Native Americans.

In true Hollywood fashion however, she was later revealed as not a true Native American but just an actress playing the part of one.

cheers!

They gave him a consolation Oscar for his supporting role in Untouchables, after failing to give him anything for much greater roles like in The Name of the Rose and Hunt for Red October.

I don't think Connery has ever delivered a bad performance. I thought he deserved an award for his portrayal of the wrongly-convicted RSM in "The Hill". If it hadn't been a "foreign" film, it might've happened.

"The Hill" was a terrific movie !

But for Thomas Sean Connery, he did win the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award (The Untouchables), he also won the Leading Actor BAFTA Award (British Academy Award) in 1988 (In the name of the Rose) and he was knighted by Elizabeth II in July 2000.

Sir Sean officially retired from acting in 2006. He has turned down future roles in Indiana Jones and Bond movies. Since '06, he done only voice overs for a couple Video Games because the money was too good to pass up.

But, you have to realize that the Oscars are less of an award and more of a competition. One's performance is weighed against all other performances for a given year (albeit through the various lenses of Politics (Hollywood and National), Social Trends, Economics, etc.).

If you gave the performance of your life in say 1970, 1972 or 1980, you'd still likely have come 2nd to Geo. C. Scott (Patton), Marlon Brando (The Godfather) and Robert De Niro (Raging Bull).

Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), never had a #1 Hit, though most of their songs would have been had they been released on different dates. CCR never had a #1 because every time they released a song, so had the Beatles, the Stones, Led Zepplin or the like. It's not that their songs weren't good enough, it was simply bad timing.

And don't even get me started on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Moody Blues, Rush and Jethro Tull are but a few of the deserving Bands never inducted. The Zombies and Yes are the veritable Susan Lucci's of the RRHOF having been passed over 25 and 20 years respectively.

In fact, many YES fans no longer want to see the band inducted. They believe it gives the band greater distinction to be snubbed every year rather than being finally accepted.

cheers!

Evidently, the past, present and future recipients/nominees would disagree with you. If the Oscars were of marginal importance to all involved, this award would have already gone the way of extinction. For better or for worse, it is THE industry standard of excellence.

Granted, Just like so many awards, there's the whole underlying greed aspect to it. What I mean by this is that it is not about the most talented, etc, etc, in whatever categories. Rather, for an Oscar winner and those who are connected with the winner, it radically boosts their "market value" and let's not forget the outright prestige of it all; it is what it is.

If any of us here were nominated for some kind of music connected Oscar or any other music related award for that matter, would we brush it off as stupid"? I think the opposite would hold true.

On face value, I definitely see your point though.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

To understand The Oscars, and The Emmys, even the Grammys . . . one must take into consideration the players. Just like the food industry, the entertainment industry has pretty much become a monopoly. Take Warner for example, the list of award related companies covers the entire spectrum (with the following subject to change with volatility in the media industry), The Warner group includes CNN, NBC (with Comcast relationship), HBO, Warner Bros. entertainment. cable, record, and publishing relationships to be brief. Performers, be they actors, comedians, talk hosts, or music celebrities, are recruited for many cross-over positions due to economics, promotion, or other benefits. WEA is not alone in this, but they, as a few others, have the power to create the production, promote, and distribute the same. They also have the means to cover the awards, and to introduce the presenters. They have the power to sway both public and private opinion (including politics), and also to shut out or add to the selectiion, whether directly or indirectly. Entry selection can also be a factor. Has this always been the case? Probably. But, what was then fragmented has become more controlled with monopolies. So these award programs have definitely changed, for the worse I fear. Still they may be found to be entertaining fodder..

Just remember this . . . what you see and hear may be popular, and what you don't see or hear may never have had a chance. That history sometimes bears consideration. IMHO
