Looking at it more, I don't even think it's a Fender. Probably just an old Strat knockoff.

If it is not just a yard ornament - I think it looks like a makeshift lap-guitar.

I call strat abuse. It looks terrible. At least Mayall's guitar looks aesthetically pleasing.

Until I hear the reason for it, I won't pass judgment. It could be someone disabled who plays it Jeff Healey style, and need the extra space and lighter headstock, or there could be other reasons we don't know about.

I concur.

As long as it was his own guitar, I couldn't give a ratsass. A person that spends more time polishing a guitar than playing it bothers me more.

Food for thought......makes me wonder who's opinions would change if this guitar DIDN'T belong to Mr. Mayall!

First off...Doing that to a guitar is wrong, but it someone else's guitar so it is up to him/her to do as they please.

As for John Mayall and his guitar, follow rule number one...John Mayall can do no wrong!

IMO, they should have matched the head stock stain front and back. Otherwise, this is an exceptionally successful restoration.

Indeed, but even so, I'm not sure it's quite kosher for them to have applied the Fender logo to the headstock...

Why? Prior to its near destruction, there were certainly logos on the headstock. Shouldn't the logos be restored along w/ the headstock shape as true to the original as possible. I could see your point if they replaced the neck as well and used one other than Fender original. I don't think they are trying to deceive anyone into thinking it is all original. I certainly would like to hear the whole guitar story from the owner or restorers.

If it was a Fender before (it's hard to be sure), I'm not sure it is one any more, at least not in the traditional sense. Now if Fender techs did the restoration, then yeah, you probably could say it is a Fender. But there's a reason why Fender doesn't make its headstock decals available for purchase to just anyone other than authorized techs (despite how obviously talented the people were who did this restoration).

I hate to type into oblivion.
We are speculating on its origin w/o enough information(is/was it a 63 Fender strat or even if it was a strat).
I would expect reputable restorers to qualify there work.
W/O serial numbers, neck pocket markings, next markings there is really no certainty.
If it was a 63 originally, then it was definitely modified...I'm no expert at vintage identification obviously.
Unfortunately, Fender decals are available to anyone, talented or otherwise. Technology, what would we do w/o it. So, you are saying that they are Fender techs because they have the decals?
I guess from the perspective of original, you are right. It isn't an original Fender anymore.
