Let's see if I can answer some of your questions.

Gretsch Guitars with the big fat bodies do sound good unplugged, although I don't know of anyone playing them unplugged at gigs or for recordings.

As I said in my other answer, the Gretsch's with the big fat bodies sound awesome plugged in to just about any amp. Gretsch also makes some kick arse Acoustic guitars too!!

F-Holes, Well, I don't think a pickguard blocking part of an F-Hole really has much bearing on sound. I could be wrong, but I haven't noticed any.

The one thing I would really change and Gretsch is already starting to do it is pinning the bridges to the body. Another thing is the tone switches, I'm more of a tone control type of player.

As far as opinions on what amps do not sound good through, Well I have not found one yet. I have played my Gretsch Guitars through Vox AC15-2, Blackstar Club 40, Peavey Classic 30, Fender DRRI, Fender Blues JR, and Blackstar ID: Core10. I have tried one through my Fender Acoustisonic yet.

Not everybody likes Gretsch Guitars probably in part to their size. It does take some getting used to. It took me buying and selling a couple of Gretsch Guitars before the "Hey I really like Gretsch Guitars" hit me hard. It took me a while because I am a bigger man. The big guitar clashed with the big me. Once I got used to it it was a good thing!!
I would have to say if you have not played a Gretsch go out and find a few to try!! They are awesome guitars!! Even the lower priced ones are very well built, sound good, and play good!!

Thanks for your quick reply, Chet. You covered the bases. It's pretty much what I thought. They look to be capable of acoustic playback, but I too have not seen yet alone heard of anyone using the Gretschs without amps.

I was dwarfed as a kid when my Dad brought home what I believe to have been called a Jumbo Western guitar . . .or something to that effect. He picked it up from a kid who had left town and who gave it to him to give to me. I don't remember much more than that, and my father was not too savvy with the instrument in the country far from a music store. :(

So I dabbled with it, gave it up, and got a small Framus later on. The large one sure sounded good though, before it broke  It may have had value since I don't know the brand name, and it was a '63! I have noticed that many of the Gretsch artists are big fellas . . . my hands are small but my size is average.. I guess time will tell when I get the chance to try them out sometime in the future.

Your input will come along with me.

Have a great day, and again thanks.

If you want to start off a little smaller check out the top row of my pic. On the far left is a Pro Jet. Far right is a Duo Jet. The one in the middle is a 130th Anniversary Model that is just slightly larger that a Gibby LP. The one in between the Duo Jet and 130th is a G3900 from the Historic Series 1999-2000.

I like Gretsch guitars. They have a long history of rockabilly sounds. 8)

But to have a little fun with Chet, I think they look better like this:

I've been GASsing for an Electromatic- esp the one with three Filtertrons. Saw a couple of reviews on YT, and LOVED the sound. Alas, my local GC only has a White Falcon... I wouldn't mind that, either! Just don't have the scratch at this time.

Since we are posting pics. Here is a pic of my 2014 Country Club. Wicked guitar ,extremely versatile! Fantastic playability!
Played a 6122-1959 Country Gentlemen quite a few times and it is on the wish list as well. Go try one of these babies out!!!

Chet:

Today, I had to take my Strat in for some work, and in the store the Gretsch selection was hanging on the wall. I have to say that I didn't take as much notice of them all before, because I was eying the Aspen Green Electromatic; but, there was a new Gretsch® White Penguin™ (white with gold) whew! They all have their own vibe. If I am correct you have one on the center of the sofa. Nice.

I didn't have time to play one today, but I know I will. The guy who sold me my Strat said he wasn't aiming for a Gretsch until he saw the Penguin and now he has it on his list.

Bottom line. Gretsch has me hooked, but I have a way to swim before I can jump into the boat

Have a great day.

I remember back in the 80's playing an old Gretsch my dad found in the attic of an abandoned house on our property. Was awesome. Seems like it said New Yorker on the headstock. Was hoping to eventually get it but went to his brother instead.

My chambered Tele has Lollartron humbuckers in it. Basically handwound copies of the ones in the Country Gentleman with a few tweaks. Doesn't have a Bigsby like Dad's but does have the same kind of tone - clean anyway. Dad was a big Chet Atkins fan and played like him. Went with a clean tone so usually didn't have an amp around that would rock it out. the Tele definitely rocks!

I like mine. But it's not what most think of when they think of Gretsch.
