Nick's posts intrigued me enough that I went out and bought a bottle of (15yo) Glen Farclas. At $85 (where I live) for a two-six it is by no means cheap but not completely out of reach. I have a bottle of Glen Fiddich (12yo) in the house. Last night I poured two drinks, one of each, over ice as is my preference and sipped on them alternately to compare. Throughout the comparison from beginning to end my olfactory sense was unable to detect any difference. Visually the Glen Farclas is slightly darker. In the mouth The Glen Farclas is ever so slightly smokier and ever so slightly smoother. Despite the two being almost identical I did have to admit in the end that the Glan Farclas was a superior whisky. It lingers a little longer after swallowing and has less bite. The Glen Fiddich costs $43 where I live making the Glen Farclas twice the price. Is it twice the whisky? No. It's not even close to twice the whisky. It is better but it's not so much better that I could ever justify the expense again. The bottle will sit in my liquor cabinet waiting for occasions special enough. In the meantime, if and when I choose to drink whisky I will go back to my Gibsons 18 Rare. It is superior in every respect and not just by a slight margin. For me whisky is about smoothness. Gibsons Rare is very likely the smoothest whisky you will ever drink and at $75 it is also a little less expensive. I do understand that for some people, smoothness is less important than nose and finish.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

My wife and I enjoy both inexpensive and expensive wine, and have for many years before the wine industry saturated the stores.

Some of the better wine, I store for years. Note that I said better, not necessarily more expensive (although, sometimes it is). I learned a long time ago that price does not dictate quality or desired taste. Given the chance to buy a bottle using a lot of cash, the odds of finding a good one is usually easier . . . But, as BMW-KTM mentioned, personal preference makes all the difference. I have, and I'm sure we all have had, expensive failures, and inexpensive treasures. Besides, the art of meeting our desired taste has become refined with knowledge, experience, and technology from the providers.

Because it's easy to find good beverage at a high price, my wife and I enjoy a challenge looking for that diamond in the ruff at a lesser price when choosing our daily habit.

We still, however, appreciate the finer things.

I gave that all up.

Now I drink one thing.
Gibson's 18 Rare.
IMO, the finest whiskey I have ever tried and I've tried lots.

Coke is it! Or sweet iced tea. Or lemon water. I can't play worth a flip loaded. Oh sure I THINK I am playing great, but if I record it and play it back when I sober up I realize my playing suffers more with every sip of booze. Your mileage may vary.

I'm actually pretty sober anytime I ever played out, but I'll have either a beer or two, or a Jack Daniel's before hand to calm any nerves. Just enough to take the edge off, but not so where I'm going to get sloppy.

Chilling whisky with ice is going to greatly reduce the flavors and make differences smaller. Ice is to whisky like catsup is to food.
To get the maximum flavour (and differences), mix the whisky with a small amount of room temperature water.

As the saying goes, there are only two things you can add to a whisky: Water, or more whisky. Ice cubes are for whiskey, not whisky.

Anyhow, Glenfiddich is a blend that can vary considerably between years. It'd be hard to compare it to anything else, given how variable it is. The only thing certain about Glenfiddich is that it will never trample your tonsils with combat boots and light coal fires in your sinuses. It's always going to be smooth sailing. It's like picking Buddy Holly on the jukebox - a safe choice.
