I'm not really familiar with all of it but the last time I had whisky was a bottle of Dewar's (blame it on TV advertising with that woman asking if you're thirsty Angus? :P ) and before that was some stuff that was really smokey. I can't remember the name of it (I doubt it was really expensive) but at first I was slightly put off (I was use to Chivas Regal before that) like it was drinking an ash tray, but the more I drank it, the more I like it. I wish I could remember the name, though. I usually have Jack Daniels, but that's whiskey with an "e." :P

Straight Bourbon Whisk(e)y for me please. Some distillers spell with the 'e', and some without.

Once in a while I'll have a bit of Chivas Regal.

Is that a smoky-flavored kind? That label looks very similar to the one I had that I can't remember the brand. I wonder if it's the one?

It's a fairly smooth tasting whisky to be honest, not a huge amount of peaty smoke to it.

From the Glenfarclas site:
Quote:
Colour: A rich golden amber.

Nose: Complex, sherried, deliciously peated, light butterscotch aromas, with a hint of dried fruit.

Flavour: Full bodied with super balance of sherried sweetness, malty tones and peaty flavours.

Finish: Long lasting, gloriously sherried, sweet, gently smoky, and distinguished.

Comment: With greater complexity than our younger whiskies, this is a great whisky drinker’s whisky.

We bottle this at 46% simply because my grandfather preferred it at this strength. It’s still a family favourite.

In his 2007 Whisky Bible, Jim Murray gave Glenfarclas 15 Years Old a score of 95/100, one of the highest scores he has awarded.

When I was in Arizona last month, Costco in Scottsdale had this for sale at $22,000.00 USD I guess it's not for drinking there were only 400 bottled and 72 in the USA, $1000 per shot. I did not buy it :( but when I went back to my 92 year old dads condo we broke out the Auchentoshan Three Wood :D :) and it was real nice. I do not have a favorite whiskey I do like most of them and I enjoy a single malt the best

$1000 a shot? Wow, I could imagine having the money to even consider doing something like that.

Great scotch and bourbon gives us many choices to be sure. In Canada, for the most part, we make and drink rye whisky, much of which filled American speakeasys during prohibition.

Crown Royal is the biggest selling Canadian whisky in Canada (Seagrams V.O. and Canadian Club are also close contenders) and in the U.S.

Canadian whisky is available worldwide; but, my travels suggest that one should specifically ask for 'rye' (should they prefer the Canadian variety) rather than 'whisky'. Otherwise, be brand specific, usually at a premium.

My take on the difference between bourbon and rye is that I prefer rye for mix with soft drinks or when drinking neat (or with water), and for cocktail recipes one should, perhaps, consider most original whisky based fancy drinks were originated with bourbon (having recipes that came from USA). This means a whiskey sour with rye, for example, would be completely different in taste from the bourbon original; however, it may be better or worse according to preference.

Over the years I have generally opted out of drinking whisky, although I do at times.
The reason is simple. Good whisky is one thing, bad whisky is another, I found that there is more bad than good amongst this liquor, and the odds of getting poor tasting whisky (scotch included) in a bar or from friends and acquaintances is far greater than getting poor tasting liquor of other varieties IMO.

More apt to be a preferential flavour choice rather than a very large quality difference, for the most part, one might even say the difference and separations amongst the worst rums/vodkas and the best rums/vodkas is much less than can be said of whisky variances. This is not to say there are no premium vodkas or rums.

Rum is known as the one bottle bar because many mixed drinks that use either vodka or whisky can often be made using rum.

In brief, being part Irish and living not far from Crown Royal's distillery, it's not hard to tell a good whisky, and to those who enjoy it I say, "Cheers!"

Here it comes
