I can totally relate to what you're saying. I've busked a number of times and I think it's a great way to get a thick skin. I think I've heard just about every possible response from girls thinking I'm god's gift to drunk assholes trying to say I'm $@!& and that they can play better. I really don't get it personally. What are they out to prove? I don't really know. A lot of them wouldn't even have the nerve to play an instrument in front of strangers on the street -that's one of the things I try to remind myself of.
While we're on this topic...this is also kind of related...What's with these guy's that work in instrument shops that act like they are too good to even serve you? A number of times I've encountered really arrogant staff in music shops that act like they're really secret rock stars and are too talented to talk to you unless you have a gold Amex or something....I feel like grabbing them by their spiked hair and bringing them back to Earth..."Hey -you are a shop assistant, get over yourself and help some customers you moron"!!
There's just no need for the attitude. At the end of the day people have just got to remember that old saying - "Keep it REAL"!
:-)

How many guitar players does it take to screw in a light bulb?

Answer: 10 -- One to screw in the light bulb, and nine others to stand around and explain afterwards how they would have done it better.

While there's no excuse for dissing others, your statement is illogical.
The worse a player you are, the less you get paid, and the more you have to play. Better players make enough dough with less play.

Arth,
I think you just validated his point.
"The worse a player you are, the less you get paid, and the more you have to play."
Who wants to hire bad players? :D

Every bar owner in America, because they're cheap, and because people spend more time ordering drinks than paying attention to the music.
As a band gets better, it changes venues and frequency of playing decreases. Surely this isn't news here, of all places?

This just in......it's news to me.
But seriously, I love the way you just grouped in EVERY bar owner in America into the "frugal" category, although I do see your point.

No, there are some that will hire good bands, because that's their image which draws patrons.

But your typical bar couldn't care less about the quality of music as long as it's not bad enough to make the patrons run away. As long as it's cheap, and they will play Proud Mary and Wonderful Tonight, that's really all that matters. Girls will dance, guys will buy drinks, and money flows in the right direction, i.e. not towards the band.

And the audience doesn't mind either. They're there to drink and enjoy each other's company. The band is as important as the light bulbs and toilets. It'd be missed if it weren't there, but it's not the main point of the evening for most of them.
And while a typical bar evening will likely have several patrons that are better players than the local band, they didn't come to listen to and an analyze the music (the dicks in the OP is an exception, thankfully). I certainly don't care whether the guys on stage play badly or not - I may grimace if they hit a really bad note, but it's not why I go to a bar. If the band has fun and I have fun, that's what matters. Neither one of us is getting rich, but at least I get drunk enough to survive another Mustang Sally without taking emotional scars. :D

I agree that you definitely have to have a thick skin to survive in this business. Musicians , at least a certain majority of them , have a high degree of jealousy which I find to be disgusting. I just got a email this morning from my band telling me that and I quote " my services are no longer required ! " This is because the other guitarist and I never got along because he likes to smoke pot to which I would always tell him, to leave that at home. Plus he would just always complain about practically everything but because he's besties with the lead singer and drummer, who happens to own the practice space , I was told that I was not a team player and given the boot. Is it unfair ? Yeah it is, but at the same time , I also look at it as a blessing because that one individual will eventually become the downfall of the band and they will only have themselves to blame for letting him stay and not me.

That sure dont hold water around my parts. You get hired in the bars here because you have a following. If your no good people dont come to see you and dont spend their money. And not all bars are cheap

Amen. Not only jealousy but I think many would like it if there were but one musician in the world and that were he.

Don't let it get to you. Life is too short to get upset by others. Live and let live. And good luck!

In this area, people generally don't come to see the band. That there is a band is all that matters for most patrons. And then they spend their money.

Well ..... you did ask. I'm not sure what answer you were expecting, considering their jerky behavior. Next time I'd let my fingers do the talking and leave it at that. Not worth getting into a brawl over who 'owns' some dive bar.
