Anyone else had to deal with this often, and by that I mean you're the subject of the "diss" from other musicians? Just wondering.

Last Friday we played a gig at one of our "regular" spots, we're there about once every 3 months or so. 4 out of 5 members of another band showed up about an hour and 1/2 into our gig and proceeded to mock and diss us amongst themselves and others. One of them actually hit on a friend of our singer using lines about how their band was so much better, how can you like these guys, etc?

After we were done I was at the bar close to these yahoo's. I asked them what they thought of our group and they were quiet except one who said he didn't enjoy us very much.

So I told him "but you sat at the bar here for almost 3 hrs not liking us and buying drinks so we still win." And walked away.

Not the best response but probably better then "F" you.

Just wondering how any of you have dealt with crap like that. Some people are just assholes, and unfortunately a lot of them are musicians. :D

I would have made both those responses into one sentence.

The way I view this is, no matter how good you are, there's always someone better. So there's no reason to go around knocking other guys down, you might be next up for a hair cut.
Sometimes when I try to give positive thoughts to someone that I don't really think is very good, I walk away hoping I sounded sincere enough.

This used to be common practice around these parts with cover bands. As I play original music I've not had much run in with it, but I've been in the audience when friends who are in cover bands were on stage and I've seen other bands show up and try to talk smack. I usually make sure to shut them down pretty quick. It's the mark of an unprofessional musician, and generally a very small person. I wouldn't pay it any mind. Let your playing do your talking. Anyone who is impressed by someone doing that isn't worth your time.

I hate hearing musicians act this way. It's uncalled for and I hope the people that do it have a real bad case of karma get hold of them.

I heard something a long time ago, "25% of the people you meet will not like you and there isn't anything that can be done to change their mind". I struggled with that for awhile then realized spending time with the other 75% was far more important. I keep my opinions to myself and don't criticize, after all I'm a guitar player not a critic. Thank your lucky stars that you aren't like them Chris.

Interesting. I wonder why they were hanging out in a bar listening to other bands? If they're really as good as they say they are shouldn't they be playing a gig somewhere?

This kind of action just demonstrates a lack of maturity and professionalism. I'm sure that lack of professionalism shows up in their performance so I really doubt they're as good as they think they are. Don't worry, they won't be around as a band for very long.

It's part of the business and I always make it a habit to just ignore people like that. If you start arguing with them, then you're just giving them more fuel to their fire. It's just not worth it.

Yep... they're the un-professional knuckleheads... not you. All Musicians have to deal with this type of crap.

How I feel about it overall... When people behave in such a fashion... well... it's simply a reflection of how they feel about... themselves.

They have to "Knock" the other guy... to feel better about their own shortcomings.

I also do my best to ignore this tuff when it happens to me... I'll admit... sometimes it's not easy... you just want to reach out... and smack someone... but... that's NOT the correct way to go about it... even if that person is right in your face... flapping off.

These people are only going to waste your time... and your energy... next time it happens... remind yourself that what these people are saying... is not about you at all you... It's actually how these people feel about..... themselves.... no need to say anything back to them... no need to defend yourself.

Having spent many years on the road with this happening too many
times it helps you develop a tougher skin and you learn to accept it as
being part of the territory, so to speak, of being a musician.

You also learn of ways to get back at 'em...but can't post here.

You're not there playing the gig to impress other musicians, it's about entertaining the general audience, if they were having a good time then you've nothing to worry about so forget all that other crap, they're not worth the time of day.
Enjoy you're music.

I think it's fairly common to talk smack about other bands and musicians. If I can't say anything positive, then I just walk out even if I just paid a cover.

Seeing someone play badly is a perfect opportunity
... for checking out what they do wrong and what they do right, and learn from both.

That said, there's no need to praise someone for a mediocre performance either. That does just as much damage as heckling and trash talk. Some people seem to feel obligated to always say something good. Just don't.

Thanx for the great responses. I don't know why these idiots just got under my skin, lord knows I've had other musicians tell me before they can play bass better then me. Even had one guy TELL me he was gonna sit in, shot that down pretty quick.

I just can't imagine acting this way. Arth1 put it pretty well when he said watch others and learn from both what they do right and what they do wrong.

It's obvious I'm a KISS fan, and not many other bands have been so universally loved and hated simultaneously. But I have this quote hanging by my desk at work. It was from an interview Paul Stanley was giving and he was asked how he handled the people that continually slammed KISS over the years. I thought it was a great answer.

"I don't care. Life is so short. It's barely long enough to connect with the people who like you - it certainly isn't long enough to make converts of the ones who don't."

Seems fitting. Thanx again for the great responses. We have a gig tomorrow so I'll have all this fresh in my mind if I run into anymore "music-heroes" with big mouths.
