In the 1960s they were reviled by the mainstream as counterculture hippie freaks. Today the US government considers them musical icons, and is issuing these commemorative stamps. Is this awesome, or what?

I think the stamps are very cool... however, I find it unfortunate that they weren't respected for the incredibly talented, visionary American Artist's that they were when they were still with us :|

But... at least they're getting the respect they deserve now... When will we see the Jim Morrison stamp?... Jerry Garcia stamp?... John Coltrane stamp?.... Charlie Parker stamp?...

For the latter two, that would be 1995:

And Jerry Garcia stamps have been issued by other countries, such as Mongolia, but not the US. Image As for Jim Morrison, given the infamous Miami incident, it might be another hundred years.

Yes, both were great artists, and I liked a lot of their music, but both were also very much drug addicts...that did themselves in with said drugs. Not sure that we should put them onto stamps. Just another side to this coin and this also says something about where our society is and not in a good way.

Yes, they both certainly had drug problems. But they are being celebrated for their musical genius, not their lifestyle choices.

If you are going to discriminate based on substance abuse, then you would have to eliminate almost everyone in the Musical Icons series (except possibly Lydia Mendoza) - Johnny Cash and Ray Charles both had drug problems. And, as pointed out above, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane have also appeared on stamps, as has Elvis Presley, and they all had drug problems.

Should we not celebrate famous artists because of their personal weaknesses? Does that lessen their contributions to our culture?

I'd rather not you and yours make that decision for everyone.
Judge those who ascribe to your values and mores, not others.

Well said. I personally choose not to do drugs, but this is one issue I see eye-to-eye with the Libertarians on. If we are really a free society, then adults should be free to make their own choices, including indulging in vices, without a nanny-state trying to save us from ourselves by making us criminals.

I know as well as anyone that drugs can be destructive, but so are alcohol and tobacco. So should we go back to prohibition?

Edit: Please and thank you. :D

Edit edit: Had to fix that, I was getting a little manic.

I'm not advocating illegal drug use, but tobacco kills more people every year than all illegal drugs combined. Look it up.
