I've been looking to replace my old Yamaha 12 string. That thing has a neck like a baseball bat.

As in extremely round?

Yamahas are nice. The company has a long tradition and know what they're doing.
I love my Seagull 12 string, but I think the back of the neck is a bit too flat; more made for classic players than people who fret with the thumb. But it still sounds good enough that I wouldn't trade it for anything less than a Takamine or Martin, if I could find one with a nice V-shaped neck.

Pretty close! It's the worst neck of any guitar I've ever owned. It's from around 1972 or so. My brother gave it to me because he had a hard time with it too. Not bad sounding, but the neck is seriously wide and really. It's a low end Yamaha, never really stayed in tune very well either. I do some 12 string slide with it in D once in a while. I've been looking at the Taylor 150e. Really nice and only around $700. It's made in Mexico, which for me is better than China and it's made out of wood too. When I bought my Martin, I was originally looking for an Epi Masterbuilt, but the workmanship was pretty sorry on the few that I tried, so I picked up the Martin for shitsngrins and loved it. I also tried Takamine, Taylor and Breedlove. Didn't care for the Takamine at all. Never liked them, but I figured it was hanging there so why not? Nothing wrong with Seagull, they're nice instruments.

It just sounded cheap and uninspiring, the Breedlove was nice but not quite what I was looking for, the Taylor had the best action of the bunch for me, but was a tad too bright for what I play. I just kept going back to the Martin. The action was a little high for my taste, so instead of letting the gorillas at GC adjust it for fifty bucks, I took it to the people who built it. I can't believe these clowns charge for a setup on a brand new guitar. The Mom and Pop store I deal with doesn't have a huge variety of acoustics so I had to go to GC. My Martin was at that time the bottom end of the Performing Artist Series, and the folks at Martin treated me like I just bought something from the Custom Shop. Nice people. Don't know what I going to do. In the Martin lineup, the Performing Artist Series has a 12 string and next up would be a D12-28. Something about a locally built guitar.

That there is what it's all about.

Yamaha makes instruments in all price ranges, so yeah, the cheaper ones are not going to be the same as the expensive ones. But for someone starting out on guitar, Yamaha is often a good choice, because there's little risk of getting a badly made one, with wolf tones or cracking seams or other problems cheap guitars often have.

What I like about the Takamines is the crispness. That tone goes so well with a marine band harp.

Taylors are much like Martins in my opinion - more mellow and "classy". If Takamine is a mustang, Martin is a thoroughbred.

The Seagull (and Godin guitars in general), I find to be more classic sounding - wood sound, and made for lighter strumming. I'm not going to pretend that a Seagull is the easiest to play with small frets and low action, but the sound is very nicely colored.

There are so many good guitars out there, and I wish I had one of each - I feel GAS coming on for another acoustic...

So far, I've never found Taylor to be what I'd call mellow. They're pretty bright. Don't get me wrong, they sound and play nice, but to my ears anyway, they lack the bottom end that a Martin. Martin has a bottom end that you can feel. Mine is an "Orchestra Model" that has a smaller body than a Dreadnaught, but you can still feel the bass notes through the back. Even with the smaller body it cuts well with larger instruments. I didn't get quite the same thing with the Taylor's in the same price range. But then again, Martin's been st it for a really long time.
