Hi

Does anyone know the key for Marvin Gaye's "Got to give it up"?

Thank you.

Go look on www.ultimate-guitar.com . You should be able to find both, the tab and chords for it on there.

According to this page it is in "10B / D" https://www.audiokeychain.com/track/tMs/marvin-gaye-got-to-give-it-up

On this wheel, musical keys can be seen as "hours" on a clock. For example, 4 o'clock corresponds to 4B or 4A. The letter "B" represents Major keys. The letter "A" represents Minor keys

Hmmm.............not so sure about that.

That looks like a very complicated Circle of 5ths, which is already complicated.

Are you serious?

I'm not of the school that believe that everyone needs to know music theory, but if you cannot tell major from minor by listening, you need to put down that guitar, step away, and go find a music teacher. No disrespect, but there are a couple of basics that you cannot do without.

Cool - thank you for your invaluable input; it warms my heart.

Please play the song bass line and see which A pentatonic sounds better - major or minor.

The tab says A, though A minor pentatonic sounds better - I am just wondering if I am missing something, or tone deaf.

Hi edelstone, I have not played to a chart (sheet music) since college. The musicians are riffing off of Marvin's vocals throughout this tune. A blues progression I hear a few blue notes sprinkled in when the guitar plays an Amaj7th now and then. IMHO YMMV (to quote my favorite Martian). Play along with the recording and you will have it.

Hi Art (pun?) you slay me  good fun Bros. 8)

Thank you SBLS - that is a bit more useful. I'll also chat to my bass teacher.

I have a teacher, and we do a lot of theory - this is probably why I am questioning the key.

What I would normally think to do doesn't seem to fit well.

I can't even really tell you what major or minor is and my dad was the music teacher. I never paid attention in his class. I play strictly by ear, and now I am figuring out tab.

I find theory very useful - "knowledge is power" at the end of the day.

Frequently I use theory to rapidly get a to a place I would have arrived had I worked by ear - theory is after all, based on what has been shown to sound "good" (over time).
