A Fretless has a nice easy feel to it. If you have a decent set of Nylons, or flats on it, they play nice. Image

True. I remember I never put flats on mine when I had it, nor did it come with them installed. I'd certainly do so these days, sans the fact I use flats anyhow. Round wounds can start chewing into your fret board after awhile.

Nice bass!

I have a fretless Jazz Special (that unfortunately needs a new neck) and an old Gibson EB0. My "one that got away" was a 1968 fretless P-bass with unlined maple fretboard, all original. My biggest Fender "could ya" wish is to bring back a few unlined options, particularly with maple fretboards.

Someone said they didn't get the fretless idea. My answer is that they have a unique sound but there's also a sense of mastery. No frets means you have to learn where to drop your fingers but it also means you can once in a while play in between traditional western tones for interesting effect. Another point of mastery is to be able to play so that you don't have the typical "buzz" associated with a fretless.

I played the fretless through the Hartke HA5500 head / Ampeg SVT-410HLF cab today. I'm going to be going to a Fender Bassman 500 head.

Actually, I did for a short time. The whole room shook. From what I heard, the head's EQ is set fine. I just had to cut the volume down, with the amp running @ 4 ohms, the full 500 watts. Image

I got the Fender Bassman 500 head the other day, and I'm running it through the Ampeg Heritage SVT-410HLF cab. The Fretless Jazz sounds great through this setup. The Bassman 500 head is a well thought out bass amp. Image

Some players only like a Fretless for a certain type of music. Or a certain type of song. I don't see it that way myself. When I want to play it, it gets played.

Kind of a topic, within a topic here. I'd like to know what type of amp you're running your Fretless Bass through.

You should duct tape all your basses together ala Red Green and have a Fender triple neck bass of doom. :P

Mostly playing through a Hartke HA3500 head with a 4 X 10 and 1 X 15 cab. The 4 X 10 is an old Guild/Hartke model, very heavy, so for small gigs I use just the modern 1 X 15 (with horn).

I've used two of those Guild/Hartke cabs through a Gallien Krueger 800RB that was the house rig for a club that I played at in NYC back in 2003. That was a pretty decent rig, especially with those cabs. Very punchy, especially since I was using a Fender P Bass Lyte with active pick ups and round rounds. Now a days I use flat wounds on a passive Jazz and an 18" speaker. A little different in the tone spectrum. Of course, it all could be subject to change, and I still have that P Bass Lyte, albeit needs repair.
