Has anyone ever seen or done this before? I found this as a wallpaper on an app I use on my phone and thought it was a cool idea. So I'm thinking of doing it when I get my Fender Strat! 8)

What are your guys' thoughts?

Calibreus, welcome to the Forum. I used to put my cigarette between strings at the headstock, a convenient cigarette holder back then. I wouldn't recommend hanging something from your guitar though, it could get caught or snagged by a mic stand.

How about two tassels, and see if you can get them spinning in opposite directions.

If there's any metal or hard plastic at all, it is bound to vibrate, much like a tuner nut (or for Gibsons, the truss hole plate) having come lose, and it will irritate the bran out of you.
And if it moves around too much, it might affect how well it holds the tuning.

Putting a cigarette butt between or on strings wasn't done so much as a cigarette holder (that's better done right over the nut under the EA string pair), but to stop sympathetic ringing.

Come on guys. Just come out and say it. It looks stupid.
Nah, do what you want. You don't need anyone's permission to hang stuff off your string trees. Who knows, maybe the added mass will enhance sustain.
Just don't leave the string ends that long. You'll poke your eye out!

Seeing that he doesn't wrap "one above, rest below" to lock the end, I kind of think it's a good thing for his cornea that he left them so long...

Why think small?
A T.Rex skull, a Corvette or maybe a Boeing 747 would really make an impression.

Thanks. :D And very true, it could get snagged by a mic stand or it also might affect tuning as another person mentioned. I'm happy you took my post moderately serious though unlike others who seem to just want to make fun of it.

Anyway it's a unique idea imo but problems could arise I guess.

Yeah I wouldn't leave my string ends that long, whoever posted the picture on that app wasn't the brightest in that sense.

I leave about an inch or so on the string ends, but curl them into a fiddlehead sort of tight spiral with needle-nosed pliers, so that there is no sharp pokey tip.

All the guys I knew who put cigarette butts on the headstock put them between the strings, just to hold them. Nothing to do with sympathetic ringing.

I saw a video of Cream in a studio setting, (1967) as they were playing Strange Brew if I remember correctly. Jack Bruce had some thing like a small stuffed fish, or bird hanging from the head of the Fender Vl he was playing. It wasn't hanging from the string tree though.

Greg T. Walker (native american bass player) from the southern rock band "Blackfoot" used to have Indian feathers dangling from the headstock of his P-bass.
