Hi

What tips do people have for managing high humidity and its impact on a guitar; a bass in this instance?

I can buy a humidifier though I am trying to avoid outlaying this cash.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you.

You have more than 60 % humidity in winter ? Sure you don't live in North America

IMO 60 % is not bad . A deshumidifier is the only tool to do the job .

Is your tool to read humidity is accurate ? New and good quality , reading humidity is not easier than temperature .

I use desiccant packs inside my cases and change them every few months based on the level of humidity.
Basically(IMHO), if your guitar is sealed properly w/ paint or lacquer, etc that area shouldn't be a problem.
Exposed woods will expand and contract based on their specific absorption rate(hardness, pores, etc), they should and need to be protected against rapid changes in humidity. Know your woods characteristics and allow gradual changes to take place before putting into storage or taking out and playing.
A humidifier adds humidity and a de-humidifier reduces humidity.

Correct. An air conditioning system will act as a dehumidifier. Since high humidity is normally a problem in hot summer months, an air conditioner may be the way to go. Also, if you have over 60% humidity, moving should be an option.
I'm lucky in L.A. We rarely get much high humidity. Sometimes in the winter it will drop below 20% and I will run a humidifier 24/7 and keep the door closed and the heater vents closed in my music room, till it recovers. Once it's over 30%, I don't worry about it. In the summer, I open the A/C vents in the room. My wife keeps the house like a meat locker, so no worries about it getting too high.

Humidity isn't all bad. A too dry climate is generally worse for wood.
And too much change in humidity is worst of all.

I believe the Fender factories have continuous droplet sprinkler systems to ensure the humidity stays at at least 50%.

Get a hygrometer and find out how much the humidity varies, and if needed, try to eliminate the variation first.
